Display Names being stripped for internal users

We have users complaining about the fact that any email that they receive from other internal users is appearing as firstname.lastname@domainname.com rather than as the DIsplay Name. If you use Outlook the Display Name is used, but then if you access the same email from either SWA or Thunderbird you get the full email. Looking at the headers it seems that the Display Name is being stripped out for mail from internal users.
I know this issue has been touched on in other forums, but I can't actually seem to find the solution. I understand the server might need to do some conversion of the mail to pass through the various service routers etc. but surely it should add the Display Name back? We are using Scalix 10.
