Test New Mailserver

Before I switch my MX record to move my companys mail from our exchange 2000 setup to our new scalix mailserver, I'd like to be able to test the new setup.

Our DNS is hosted by our ISP, so if I called them and had them setup a dummy MX record - something like example.com - that pointed at the new mailserver would that work? Assuming I setup the new mailserver to accept the dummy hostname?

Make sense?

Yes. This test will work.

Just to be clear tho; if you have your ISP setup a test MX record called "example.com" then you will need to modify/create users on the Scalix server that have email addresses of "joe.user@example.com"

Also note that if you are going to test outgoing mail, that the first email address in the list is the primary and will be used as the reply-to on outgoing mail.

Ok, so my ISP said I can't do this because "the domain needs to be registered".

Any other ideas?

Hi,
just create a subdomain from your own domain, e.g
If your real domain is called mydomain.com, then create a subdomain like mailtest.mydomain.com.
Then create a MX record for the subdomain mailtest.mydomain.com
