PIM synchronization between Blackberry and Scalix Server?

Postby bsneddon » Thu Aug 18, 2005 3:13 pm

What is required to get a Blackberry to sync at least calendaring and contacts with a Scalix server? Are third party utilities required (if so, which ones?) or does Scalix support it natively? If it's native, how do you configure the association between a Blackberry and a particular mailbox?

Thanks.
Brian

What if I don't need it wireless?

Postby rex007can » Mon Oct 24, 2005 2:43 pm

You say that Scalix offers a wireless connection thing for portable devices devices.

Well I don't want to pay/add/configure a service for one single user who USED to be able to synch his blackberry before we moved to Scalix. He just wants to synch from his cradle.

How do I get this done?

(guessing, as we havent tried it): like before?
IMHO cradle-based synch is done with the Blackberry Desktop Software which supports various Outlook-Versions. From this side are no limitations to the MAPI-Service provider.
If the synch doesnt do some nasty things it should work also with Scalix.

BlackBerry Sync

It works fine as long as you're running BlackBerry desktop software version 3.6.

You can also "fake" syncing the email by using sxaa to forward a copy to the backberry as well as --retain so that you also keep it on the desktop. It's a bit annoying that you have 2 copies, and the real solution is to use Notify's stuff, but if the basics are all you need, this will serve you well. We have a number of people working like this.

It'll break if you do any updates past 3.6 though. There is mention in another thread that the next version of Scalix connect will fix many of these sync problems. So keep your fingers crossed.

Enjoy.
Kev.

Anyone used Notify?

Postby Jadmin » Mon Nov 21, 2005 8:45 pm

Has anyone installed and used Notify with Scalix? And if so how has it worked for you? My execs all want wireless but they have Palm, BlackBerry, and HP. NotifyLink said they can handle it all, but I just don't see any comments about it from anyone good or bad. I know they're kinda new it seems.

well, obviously we ourselves here at scalix were some of the first users..... so! :-)

first of all, notifylink is *not* a brand new solution; it has been used with other email systems for years; notify launched their scalix version this summer.

I've been using it for 3 months with a blackberry and now i'm on a pocket pc; I'll probably switch to a symbian phone once the new Nokia E series models AND Notify's SyncML/Symbian support becomes available; assume this is going to be early next year.

I must say... so far, so good; very few issues (we had a few character set glitches here in europe, but most of that is fixed now), good to work with them, etc. please contact your scalix reseller or sales rep; he'll be working with you to get you in touch with Notify so that you get a trial version - always best to test yourself.

Florian.

Notify Usage

Postby BigJoe » Tue Nov 22, 2005 7:21 pm

We have tested and run Notify Link on pretty much any device that they support. Their latest version of the Palm client is very nice. I am currently running the Notify client on a Nextel Blackberry. My counterpart is running it on Windows CE 2003. We are having some issues with Windows CE right now but Notify is working on it. It is mainly with installing the client.

We tested a whole gambit of devices and found that they work pretty well. Some of the things we ran into were configuring the software, sizing the server, abnormal reoccuring meetings (the third tues of the month, etc). The first two we resolved with Notify, the last one Scalix worked with Notify and resolved it.

It has taken us some time to get it going but we only had one person working on it and testing a handful of different devices. If you are already familiar with the devices they all seem to work decently.

We tested the Treo 650 with an older client which really sucked. They have since upgraded it and it is a ton better but we had "moved on" from that.

Lastly our cell coverage have caused us some greif but if you are using data services already your users should know dead spots and how to reconnect, etc. Not necessarily a issue with Notify but with the devices not auto-reconnecting.

Thanks for your assurance. Are there a lot of Scalix users using Notify? I assume nowadays every company has at least one person that wants this feature. Notify told me that they can host the server if I only have a few users and remotely administer my accounts as well.
