We have some users that wish to have an approved senders list, where users that are not on the list get a challenge e-mail to fill out an image verification web form prior to message delivery.
Obviously this is not a functionality that is a part of Scalix (at least not right now..), but I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with approved sender lists and getting such a mechanism to work with Scalix?

speaking generally, there are two places in your mailroute that you could implement such functionality: on a relay before Scalix, or on the Scalix box itself.
On a relay before the Scalix machine, just use the solution you normally use for sender verification and pass the mails on to Scalix. If you want to do it directly on the Scalix box, you should integrate it as a milter with sendmail - see the amavisd howto on the wiki for some more on milter setup - and have sendmail act as incoming MTA.
