Problem: missing "To:" and "From:" from

Postby smorin » Tue Jul 12, 2005 9:03 am

Good afternoon,

We are in the process of migrating from OpenMail 6 to Scalix 9.2.1 and are having a specific problem.

When importing mailboxes into our new Scalix mailnode we notice that all local emails have no "to" and "from" information using the Scalix Connector and Outlook 2000. Emails which originated outside of the system have the proper internet address name for recipient and originator.
When using the web mail application this information appears, but in the format "username/ABC@server.domain.com" ABC being the original mailnode name on the OpenMail server, instead of "First Last". We have created new user accounts in Scalix to match the users being migrated and the import of the data using omcpinu -f -m works but with this issue.
We tried creating a new identical named mailnode but the "to" and "from" info still does not appear in Outlook, however in the web mail application the user name appears correctly for this information (as "First Last"). Also, the recipient name for mails in the "Sent Item" folder appear to have the correct format of "First Last" with Outlook but in the web mail application is in the format "username/ABC@server.domain.com".

This is a show-stopper for us as we cannot import these mailboxes with no local mail originator/recipient information. What can we do to alleviate this problem? We have rolled back or migration and cannot continue until this is resolved.

Thank you for your help.

Stephen,

what you're trying to archieve is a more complex migration situation; particularly because you've obviously been changing Mailnode names during the setup process of your new server.

Scalix does not officially support migration from OpenMail or SamsungContact, however, we have a process that is proven to work and we use this process on a case by case basis; circumstances are different in any case, so we'd like to work with our customers to resolve this in the best possible way.

Please contact our support for details; you might also need some recently updated components to help with your efforts. These are also available through support!

Cheers,
Florian

This is a question more than a statement, but since I went through this exact problem several months ago I gave it some significant thought after the fact.

If the migration was done by setting up a user in Scalix, and then their email was migrated by using fetchmail to retrieve it from the old server, I suspect this would work to retrieve all of the old email, with all the header info. The issue would be that all email would be tagged as new.

Is that correct? If so, would it help resolve Stephen's problem?

Just a thought.
Kev.

Hi Kevin, Hi Stephen,

this WOULD solve the problem for email from a user's perspective...... but:
- it would not/only partially work for messages received as BCC user.
- it would not reproduce the users folder structure
- internal mail would look like it has come through smtp
- it would only migrate email data correctly, no calendar, tasks, notes, etc.

so.. yes... in some situations this can be used while in other situations this is absolutely impossible.

Cheers,
Florian.

Hello,

to sum this one up, migration assistance is available from Support and has been provided. The migration has been successful.

Thanks for all the replies. We contacted Scalix support and they supplied us with a patch that sems to fix the problem, as long as our mailnode name on the new Scalix server is the same as the old OpenMail server's mailnode name.- Stephen

Stephen,

there is ways to get it working even WITH a changed mailnode name, but unless you really have to do the change, it's much simpler to leave it as-is.

cheers,
Florian.
