Upgrading OS and Scalix

Postby rfulgado » Wed Jan 11, 2012 8:38 pm

Hi All,

We are currently trying to upgrade our server, hardware and it's OS. It is currently using Fedora Core 4 with Scalix 10.
Yeah I know, our OS is ancient. Anyway, I already have Centos 5.6 and Scalix 11.4.6 installed on a replacement server.

I am just doing a dry run of moving the mailboxes to the new server. Every night, a script runs to create a backup
of all mailboxes using omcpoutu. I scp those files to the new server and run omcpinu on each backup file.
I got "Internal problem detected, see the log files" on a few files.

Is this the right way to go to get to Scalix 11.4.6?
And where are these 'log files' located.
I am running 'omscan -Aafvx' right now. And will try to do omcpoutu again tomorrow.
Hopefully, tonight's backup wont produce "internal problem detected" when I rerun omcpinu.

Any suggestions is very much appreciated.
Thank you all.

Sorry, I forgot to post the second line of the error. here is the complete message:

omcpinu : Internal problem detected, see the log files
[OM.PM 3011] Unexpected EOF from input.

Thank you.

wow! scalix 10 still in use!

Its been a very long time since i've done scalix upgrades and cross platform. If i cast my thoughts back i think the best way is thus.....

on the new server, remove scalix. start clean.
rsync ONLY /var/opt/scalix from the old to the new server.
run the scalix installer (11.4.6), doing a typical installation. It should detect your old mailstore and upgrade it.

There are specific upgrade notes in the release notes and many other posts in the forums on this too.

Les Stott

YOu probably want to either stop scalix on the source machine before copying data or create a LVM snapshot 1st (if FC4 supports it.)

Also, if you install Scalix 11 and it does NOT detect the migrated data (and instead creates a new mail store), you should be able to specify the correct data path (OMDATADIR) in /etc/opt/scalix/instance.cfg/ I did this when I had a 2nd scalix 11 server set up that I used to read data restored from tape.

I vaguely recall that at some point omcpinu and omcpoutu broke on me. It may have been after upgrading to Scalix 11. Which is why I had to change to the 2ndary server for data recovery.

Thank you to those that gave some insights on how to deal with mu dilemma.

I don't have LVM on FC4 so I can not do a snapshot.
I will try the les' suggestion.

Thank you. At least I have something to go on from. I will let you know how it went.

Thanks again guys.

I am curious, with Scalix 10, is there a way to convert mailboxes to unix mbox format?

Thanks

NOt as far as I know. You would probably be better off using a command line tool that can access the mailbox via IMAP protocol. I used a tool called imapsync in the past to move mail between different types of mail server as an IMAP-to-IMAP transfer. It may do IMAP-to-text. It might not be a free download anymore.

Thanks for your prompt reply echelon. I will look later if that tool is available.
BTW, running omscan on all mailboxes fixes my initial problem. Only hitch is
it takes 5 hours to import all the mailboxes to the new server. We don't
have a lot of account, only 30, most are pop accounts and a few are imap.

Thanks

I have to keep the old scalix 10 server running but with a different hostname and ip address.

I found this FAQ:
http://www.scalix.com/wiki/index.php?title=HowTos/ChangeFQDN

Can use most of the scripts in there? I know the scalix 10 does not use the instance name
and I can adjust the scripts accordingly.

Thanks
