Problem Saving Account Changes

Hi All,
I have a user who is having all kinds of strange messages with her account. She reports that every time she logs in and clicks on a message she gets an error along the lines of "the message could not be displayed because it has been deleted."
I have removed all rules from her account, and eventually went as far as recreating her account by performing the following steps:
Changing her SMTP address of the original account (prefix with a z)
Changing the display name of the original account (prefix with a z)
Creating a new account with the same SMTP and display name, but a new logon identity
That seems to have fixed the delivery problem (so far) but I still do not think the account is healthy. On both of her accounts (old and new) I cannot make updates to her contact information - receiving an error 'the user information could not be saved'.
Shouldn't a brand-new mailbox be free of whatever corruption is not letting me save a phone number update? What can I do to verify a 'healthy' mailbox in this situation?
Thanks,
Jason
