Looking for a hardware recommendation.
300 users
Highspeed LAN's
Most users open email and leave it open for 8 hours.
Can I time a user out after 10 minutes to reduce the load.
I've read a lot about Swap file size, and Tomcat memory.
Any recommendations would be great.
Dual/Dual Core and SWA is FAST

Well I've decided to go overboard and thought that I would post my success story.
I've thrown two dual core opterons
1st Socket has 4 GB of RAM...2GB on each channel for each core.
2nd Socket only has 2GB...1GB for each core
with 6 250 GB SATA300 Drives
It's one of SuperMicro's new APlus systems.
I configured tomcat to use 1GB of RAM min and 2GB max
I then removed a lot of services that simply don't need to be running in FC4. I mean bluetooth and pcmcia...come on.
Server boots in under a minute......and man is SWA fast. Message sent in about .5 second.
Now this is just me and on the same LAN...so I called a technician and had him try from a DSL connection...the server is located across two wireless bridges from our main ISP connection. He was blown away....it was fast.
Moral of the story, email is mission critical so let's throw as much hardware at the problem as I can afford. Simply, email is not going away and load is only going to get worse...(Thanks to all the spammers out there)
User load increases every year. Hopefully, on Monday everyone will be like...wow it's fast.....hopefully. As the years go by it may get slower...but oh well, sometimes money can really solve the problem.
