send and receive internet email

i have just installed scalix 10.0.1.6 CE on Suse 10.0.
everything looks to be setup correctly but i am not able to send mail to external addresses
the server is setup for internal email using a .local address
we also have email hosted outside our domain for several users who have their own username and password to download the email into outlook.

what i would like to do have scalix download the email from the outside server and allow ther user to access with outlook that way.
is this possible?
if so how should i go about setting this up.

i see that scalix outlook connect will not work with a pop3 or internet email account, and that is why i am asking.

I'm having the same problem about sending out mail, except it is on Red Hat Enterprise.
