Restricting public folder access

Hi all,
I'm having trouble with some public folder permissions.
I want to have the folder readable by one user only, but allow anybody on the server to put items into the folder.
This is for our bayesian filter to extract ham from the folder. I have requested that everyone put copies of good mail in the folder, but we don't want it to be accessible to all and sundry. I have one user who IMAPs in regularly to clean it out (automatically).
I have tried setting the default access to this folder to allow Create items, Create sub-folders, Folder owner and Folder Visible, but not Read items. I have Edit items and Delete items both set to "All" for the default. Anybody trying to put mail into the folder gets a permissions error. It seems it is only possible to put mail in this folder if you have read access.
Have I got it wrong somewhere?
I know it sounds silly to have write access but not read access, but when you look at why I'm doing it, it kinda makes sense.

As the folder is listed before being displayed, you would need read access. I'll talk to our resident permissions guru if he is well and in the office again today, but I don't think you can do that.

I thought it might be something like that. I've found another way to do what I need to do, though.
As it happens, I can use Outlook Express without any real problems.
