Posting this ‘cause initially I went looking in completely the wrong place for the problem. The archiving service on our mail archiving server fell over and caused a backlog of 10 000+ messages in the Scalix archive queue which caused the following omscan error:

Event logged on X date at X time.Once the queue was cleared and the omscan server reset and re-run the error disappeared. We only recently added the mail archiving server and have added monitoring the archiver queue to the frequent sxmaint script.
