Hi together,

i just reviewed the SCALIX website for the first time and it looks really impressive - thanks a lot for this product.

I'm in just a little SOHO-Config here and i'm looking for a special solution. Unfortunately i couldn't find out if scalix would suite my needs.

I would need the following:

- a few imap-accounts
- one imap account should be able to receive several mails and sort them into folders with server based rules. (with spam- and viruscheck if possible)
- client should be thunderbird (don't want to see Outlook anymore :()
- each client/accout should be able to use different sender-emails to send via the smtp
- smtp-server should use an relay-server to send outgoing emails.

best would be if the client could configure the serverbased rules and if the webclient would be able to use all the different sender-addresses but i don't think this would be possible (the first probably with outlook - but who wants that :D)

Again.. No problem. Server side rules are supported and can be configured using both the webclient and the Outlook Connector.

TB is fully supported, but i would suggest that you check out the webclient. It fully supports Firefox and IE. The webclient is a full function AJAX client that give you much more functionality than TB.

hmm never thought about using webmail on my desktop but probably would be worth a test.

Am i able to use different sender emails with one account - means without logging in again for each time sending mail as another sender? If yes it would really be worth testing it.

Yes.. absolutely. They can set their ReplyTo address in Scalix Web Access (the webmail component).

Just to be sure:

I can choose to send one mail with "support@domain.com" as sender (not only reply-to but from) and i may choose the next one to be sent as "myname@domain.com" like i can do it in outlook when sending a mail!?

I did some checking on this. From the webclient, you can only change the "Reply To" address, not the "From" address.

When you are referring to doing this in "Outlook," do you mean Outlook running in Workgroup mode (ie talking to an Exchange server) or in IMAP/POP mode?

When using this in outlook i'm in exchange mode but i use an external SMTP to send each mail with a different sender. But they all get saved within "Sent Mail" Folder of the exchange account.

If the Webclient is really that good that it looks like it would be great to have this feature.

But could you confirm this would be possible within TB and Scalix as the SMTP or do i have to use another external smtp for that?

The answer is "yes". I am not a TB user, but i just checked with a TB power user and he read thru this thread and asssures me that what you want to do is possible with TB and Scalix.

thanks for your help. It's not really a TB Problem. The only question is if i could set scalix' SMTP to just accept any outgoing mail-address independent from the account i use without getten it rewritten by the server.

Maybe this all sounds a bit strange for you but i'll give you a short idea of my background - maybe you'll then understand the need for that:

I've got my own little company nowadays only having some freelancers working for me. Let's thinkg about this situation:

My personal business email: pre.surname@company.com
A project i'm running: info@yetanotherproject.com
another project: info@againone.com
my private email: me@myname.com

So i sometimes send mails to business partners from my personal business-account, other days i need to do project support where my name doesn't matter and the email probably also gets forwarded to other people and i don't want to have my primarly email in there. another situation of course with the private stuff wich i have to devide from the business part.

to get this all best handled i'm currently have all the emails forwarded to my exchange account (hosted by a bigger company) and sorted the mails into different subfolders dependet from the sender, the receiver, the subject and something else. Additionally i use a desktop-antispam tool and a desktop antivirus tool. So i'm nothing on outlook webaccess not having about 200-300 spammails a day sorted out ;)

Also i have setup some additional POP3-Accounts in Outlook. I only use the SMTP-Part of them so is just entered "127.0.0.1" as POP-Server and don't poll them. This way i have the possibility to choose the email-sender within the new-message window ("Senden als" (in german means "send as") and with this dropdown i choose the from-values for the mail to send).

I then send the mails via my local dynamic-IP (DSL) to a paid relayserver. Unfortunately of course this only works with local outlook installed - outlook webaccess unfortunately doesn't support something like that as the additional POP-Accounts (and SMTP) are only setup locally.

This way it "works" currently apart from a few things:

- i'd love to have spam/virus-stuff done server-side
- having a really good webclient would be best ever - even having the different sender-adresses work would do the job
- i want definitely get rid of outlook :)

The only know solution for me this days is to manually setup smtp, imap, and all the stuff on a linux box. Unfortunately i'm not a llinux-pro. I definitely know about linux, installed some boxes, but that's way too hard for me. Also Scalix looks like a complete and good solution - but probably not for me?

I don't know - i just spent this day to setup a Suse-Box here to give it a try - unfortunately i took SuSe 10.1 where i can't get Scalix setup on... i already tried changing version numbers in /etc/SuSe-release but this doesn't fix some dependency problems :(

Probably i may find a mini-iso for 10.0-OSS to give it another try - i've not been happy so far.

If im following you correctly, then the answer is "yes this will work" and "no, this is not a problem"

At this point, i suggest that you simply download and install our product. It takes less than 10 minutes to install and configure.

I currently can't find the DVD Image or Mini-ISO (Networkinstall) for Suse 10.0-OSS and i don't want to burn 5 CDs or something.

Just going on with that - will try to get it running - looks really good so far..

I just had someone else take a quick look at your previous post. He tested a couple of things and his definitive reply is as follows:

"Yes" you can change the "From" address when using a client such as TB or Outlook Express. Scalix does NOT rewrite the header info on the outbound message.

So i think we've got you covered!!!!

Would be great if your developers could think about integrating the sender-possibilities into the web client :)

unfortunately i'm still unable to install scalix :(

i installed FC4 today. After some security updates i tried to install scalix via the installer. I get network and dependenciy check errors.

"compat-libstdc++-296 is needed by scalix...." and
"libstdc++-libc-6.2-2.so.3 is needed by scalix..."

unfortunately any glibc and libstdc++ packet i could find is already installed.

Also the situation is that i'm behind a router with a forwarding DNS only and the hostname of the machine isn't known by this dns. that's where the network check error is coming from - any way around that?

Regarding install on FC4, there are many good articles in the Installation forum relating to this. Below are links to some of my favorites..

1) Dont forget to to turn off SELinux
2) You can workaround the DNS dependency by updating your /etc/hosts file and make sure that the hostname is associated with a real ipaddress instead of 127.0.0.1
3) The library dependencies just require you to run "yum". This is all documented in the links above.

Also, as our friend Don, in Support would say "Dont be afraid to use that Search button at the top of the screen."
