Scalix Forums

My company wants to implement Scalix or Open-Exchange. We really want an open API that we can develop third party tools for though. Initially these tools/plugins would be for integration with other in-house systems but in the future we may want to sell/license or give them back ot the community.

Is this possible with Scalix? Is there an API?

On a boarder note, could anyone else who has evaluated Scalix vs OX can you give your pros/cons for each?

I assume the silence means that there is no open API for end user development?

Anyone from Scalix care to comment about API's?

We're running the Enterprise Edition and I've already had a number of ideas that my company could benefit from if we had an API to work with.

You know... this is the right question at the right time.

We're just preparing for the initial Community Preview Release of our upcoming Scalix 11 product, to be announced at LinuxWorld San Francisco.

One of the most prominent new features will be the advent of a new Web Services platform based on REST APIs for data access and SOAP APIs for administration.

Even better, the Platform will be open-sourced as part of our new OSS initiative, so should anything be missing, you'll be able to add yourself.

Hope you can holdoff just a few weeks longer and you'll be good to go.

As long as there is some love for the Enterprise users I'll be happy. My company suffers badly from multiple points of existance. Take a "contact" for example. We have contacts existing in at least 3 systems that have no ties to each: Oracle Apps, a CRM solution, and Outlook (and soon to be Scalix). Oh how this bothers me. Not to mention that we'll be throwing SharePoint or Zope into the mix soon. I'm obviously pushing for Zope.

So besides an API, when's the IPO? :D

There's certainly a lot of attention about what the enterprise user needs, given how we position our product. data duplication is a huge problem these days, probably even more so in calendaring. We expect to see a number of really useful integration based on the new APIs.

We also believe that especially for the Enterprise, client-side integrations through either Outlook or web-based mashups (as useful they might be for outbound lightweight integrations such as package tracking) don't work that well due to their dependency on specific client technology (as opposed to our clients-of-choice strategy) and also because of the inherent fragility of client-side integrations.
