Webmail client fails for large mailboxes!

Postby dpuryear » Tue May 30, 2006 4:04 pm

I have noticed that the Scalix webmail client fails for large mailboxes (e.g., if the mailbox has 1000 messages). I get a "The server failed to send back a valid XML response."

Now, I realize a lot of people are like "Well, don't have that much mail!" Alas, I, and a lot of people we work with, are from the IMAP/UNIX world where we are used to having large mailboxes of old mail that we can scan at ease when needed. I'd like to see if there is a solution that lets us not have to manually delete or move read emails but keeps the ability to use the Scalix webmail client.

Any ideas on this? We are using the latest and greatest Scalix as of today.

This doesn't really have anything to do with the size of the mailbox. It is as the error says, there is invalid xml in the message, likely the header. Typically this is caused by randomly generated spam messages that throw an eight bit character in the header. Eight bit characters are invalid xml.

Currently the solution for CE users is to access the mailbox with an imap client and move messages out of the inbox one at a time or in batches until you are able to narrow down the offending message and can access the inbox with swa again. It's a pain I know. I suggest using a spam filter such as spam assassign to ward off as much spam as possible.

A future release will not be as strict on 8 bit characters.

Regards,
Don

Ah, got it. Yeah, that pretty much sucks. :-)
