Hello, we have a few users who have names with a short and a long version (IE Matthew and Matt). Is there an elegant way to create an e-mail alias so that all mail sent to matt@ourdomain.com is automatically forwarded to matthew@ourdomain.com?

Yes, you use SAC to add an additional mail address to that user.
