I am trying out scalix, which I think is what we need to replace our existing mail server (Mdeamon), but I cannot send
email to an address at my isp

I get the following ( I have changed the addresses )

<mydomain> replaces the internal domain name, <user> is one of my email names at my isp, <myisp> replaces the name of my isp
<internaluser> replaces the domain user who is trying to send mail out.


I have searched on this forum, I have set up an internal dns server, dig on <my domain> MX points to my mailserver, RELAY is
pointing at the internal domain.

Am I doing something wrong? am I missing something? or do I need a registered domain, if so this could be a problem, as our
registered domain is else where with our website.

If you want to send mail to an external address you need to make sure that the sender domain is valid all over the internet. It looks like the receiving mail server won't accept the email because it can't resolve the sending domain.

Hi, as far as I can tell the thread I was referred to, has nothing to do with my problem, internal dns works, the email gets to my isp and gets rejected there.
I repeat, do I have to have a real domain to send emails, not a bogus internal one or is there some way of faking it.

The same reason applies.

The receiving side must be able to resolve your domain otherwise your mail, as you can see, does not get delivered.

This differs from one recipient to the next. Some people are paranoid about unresolvable domains, others aren't.

Basically, your domain needs to be resolvable in worldwide DNS.

Hi. As mephisto has stated, your domain has to be valid in order for you to send. I believe what Sascha was pointing out is that it can be worked around, but it has to be done by your ISP. It's highly unlikely they'll do it because it opens them up for spammers.

I guess what I'm not clear on is if your domain isn't valid, how do you expect people to be able to send mail back to you?

We use, as I said, Mdeamon as our mailserver and run as a workgroup, we want to change to a domain for various reasons, but object to paying the vast amounts we have been quoted for going the microsoft route.
I have been surfing the internet since I first posted and now believe the problem is not with Scalix but Sendmail, as an aside, could Sendmail be anymore complicated than it is?
I have so far got my ISP to stop rejecting my emails as unknown domain, but still have problems, I will post my questions on their forum.
As to how to get emails into my sudodomain, I thought Fetchmail, but one thing at a time, lets get the email sent first.

Before I went off to the Sendmail website, I had a thought, I have been try to send mail from the Scalix webmail. I set up kmail on my laptop (running mandrake) and sent an email through my Scalix email server, it works!!!
So I am back here again, It must be a Scalix problem, why does Scalix pass email from a client but not by webmail? anybody got any ideas, I am not looking for a step by step guide ( though that would be nice :-) ) but a pointer for what to read next.

What email address did you send from on your laptop? Now, what email address did you send from SWA? Are they the same address?

If I log into webmail as username@ my domain.org and send email it gets bounced back to hostmaster@my domain.org, this is root (only just found this out). If I send email via kmail as username@my domain.org it gets delivered ok, and yes they are the same username etc. This would suggest to me that I have set Sendmail correctly and the problem lies in Scalix, but I am open to suggestions otherwise

Assuming kmail did go through the Scalix SMTP Relay, then SWA is doing exactly the same thing, as it also sends through the SMTP Relay. So, find the entries in the /var/log/maillog file for both the kmail and SWA messages and post those there.

sorry to have been so long in posting this but my samba server went out of action after a power cut.

on Apr 1 I sent an email from the scalix webmail, it bounced, on Apr 2 I sent a similar email from kmail on my laptop, this arrived at the intended place, Kmail is set up as username rowland@elslack.org, mailserver 10.1.1.230. the details of my isp are only in sendmail.
I suppose it is possible that kmail did not go through scalix but went straight to sendmail, but if this is the case, then surely scalix should be able to do the same.

In Kmail, you said your username is set to xxxxxxx@elslack.org [edited by me] , but do you have different reply to or email address field? If I attempt to send a message through your ISP with your info, I get:



so clearly your ISP is not accepting mail if it's FROM the address you posted.

Once again, I come back to the question, if xxxxxxx@elslack.org is not a valid email address, how can people send you email or reply to messages you send?

Lastly, in the logfile you posted, there seems to be a line missing. It should be from April 2 and should show a connection to your ISP with stat=Sent. I see the one from April 1 where the stat=User unknown, but not one that shows a successful sent to your ISP. Could you check your logs again?

If, as you say, my isp is rejecting my emails because my sudo domain does not exist, how did the email on Apr 2 get delivered into my mail box at hortimech@f2s.com? also ifyou look closely at the last line of portion of the log I posted you will find the "stat=Sent".
I have amended sendmail to change the internal domain name to my isp domain name and entered my authentication details.
The question is why does sending from a client work and sending from scalix webmail not,
either scalix uses sendmail or it doesn't or not correctly.
As to the "how will people send me email" question, the answer is simple, they will not send email to my internal address, they will send it to my isp address and I will collect it from there by FETCHMAIL, I will also send all email via my isp.

What do you mean, "if, as you say...", I posted the telnet session I had with your ISP. Do you think I made that up? I posted the results from the actual session that shows your ISP is returning that error. That's basically the same conversation that sendmail is having with your ISP.

Second, the last stat=Sent line is from the local delivery:



NOT with the connection to your ISP. If you look closely at the entry from April 1, you'll see this:



Notice the relay is mail9.freedom2surf.net. If the message from Kmail passed through the Scalix server to your ISP, there would be a line similar to that with stat=Sent.

Regarding sending from a client vs webmail, I can't tell you why it's working from your client because I haven't seen any logs that show a message from your client passing through to your ISP. It may be the From field is different. It may be it's using AuthSMTP and your ISP allows those through.
