Change Path for Scalix Backup

Postby aminamin » Thu Aug 26, 2010 12:27 pm

Dear all forum memebers
Since sometimes I have serious problem with my /var partition.
In fact this partition is full and the most big file is /var/backup
So I want to change path for backup folder. I buy a new external hard driver and put it on
the server. I would like forward backup to this external hard driver.

Someone can assist me to change this configuration.

Thanks in advance

@aminamin -> hmmm I am cringing at the moment... did you say that you are backing up your mail server to the Mail servers /var/backup??!!!! If you are, you really don't have a backup. You have a copy of the data files and that is all. Should you experience catastrophic failure of your mail server either due to human error or natural disaster (like the computer getting struck by lightning or experiencing a power surge, you will have LOST all your data, and you job.

A True backup consists of 3 copies of your data, One that you use. one that is in another location like a separate hard disk, and one that is kept OFFSITE, like in a safe deposit box or some other secure location. the backups are updated every time you do a backup. So if you do backups nightly, then your local one should also be updated nightly and your offsite one should be updated weekly. This way when something does happen, you have access to everyone's Email, even if its a week old. You can update your offsite backups daily if you wish but it will require a total of 3 hard drives. One for the local backup, one for the offsite and one that is rotated between local and offsite (swapping of the hard drive out of the safe deposit box for example).

Also a good backup plan requires you to test your data that has been backed up. Have you built a test scalix server and actually restored your backup to see if its working as you expected?

In answer to your question, I would strongly suggest you move that backup to an external hard drive as soon as you can. The backups will take longer because you will be going over the USB interface but its better than nothing.

Please post your backup script here so that we can look at it and see what can be done to help you out in this area.

The Forum has some good threads on backing up your data, use the search function and type in the key word "backup" (with out quotes) to get further Ideas on backing up your Email server.

Sincerely,

dear side band
Do not be cring !!! You are right I was backing up my mail server to /var/backup. Right now I have changed
the location as you advise. datas are now bakuping up on an external hard driver. my next step is to do an offsite backup.

Have you built a test scalix server and actually restored your backup to see if its working as you expected?
No, can you please give all requirements to restore backup. Ideally in another computer or an old user that had resigned.

Attached find a screenshot for the script changed with new location of the backup.

thanks a lot and looking forward you advises to make a best backup for mail server

writing directly to a CIFS/SMB share is not the best idea.
Degraded performance and possible data loss.

And I wonder why you are looking for help here if your organization has a central IT-Helpdesk and a Support Contract at Scalix.
