Hi,

I have just setup an Scalix email server ver 10. Everything is working great. My questions is I have gotten some spam. It says it cam from accounting@mydomain.com.

I have tried to send email to that address which doesn't exist on the server and it just comes back.

No one knows about the email server and no one has any email address that are on it. Where did this email come from? Is it an internal spam from the email server?

Thanks

I see this quite often. Some spammers will generate messages with fake senders that look like they come from your domain. What they do is they check random domains for their MX server and use that information against you. If you look into the message's header lines you will see that it comes from outside.

That's the thing about spam, it can come from any address you can think of. Just because the address says it comes from your domain doesn't mean to say that it originated there.

It's a sad fact in today's world that as soon as you make a domain available to the rest of the Internet, it becomes a target for spam and various spambots will use generic names, like accounting, in an attempt to get mail into your organisation.

The main thing you can do to mitigate this sort of thing is never to include your genuine details in trace files that you post and to sign up to mailing lists with disposable mail accounts.

Cheers

Dave.
