What is a mailnode and where can I learn more

Postby rgmhtt » Sun Mar 05, 2006 7:41 pm

I may have been using SMTP for13 years, but I have always had fairly simple mail servers.

With Scalix, I realize I am getting into the big time...

When I did my install, the mailnode created was host, domain (minus the .com).

Now my guess is a mailnode is a FQDN that is part of an RFC822name. So since all of my mail comes to user@domain.com, would the mailnode be <,domain> (that is the first field is null).

And I support 2 domains, soon three. One is in .com, on in .org, the third may be .net, or .org (TBD). All that matters for the mailnode is the domain (provided I don't have two domains in different TLDs?).

Or is the mailnode in these cases <domain, com> and <domain2,org> and so forth?

I really hope that with the Community version I will be able to assign account maintainance of that mailnode to the appropriate person. Oh, one domain is a school, the other a 501c.

Mailnodes are just a logical grouping of users. There is zero link between mailnodes and domains. You can have whatever domain you want in the internet address, Scalix doesn't "own" a domain.

The only requirement is that the mailnode is unique to a particular server in your Scalix network, i.e. a mailnode cannot exist on more than one server.

Cheers

I know that Scalix does not 'own' a doman, but to all practical purposes, the MX record(s) give all a domain's mail to a server.

So I can name the mailnode pretty much what I want and somewhere there I will be able to set the FQDN that is accepted for incoming mail and will be used for outgoing mail.

What if i want to have my default sending domain to xyz.com and have another domain abc.com. I want my emails to go out as xyz.com temporarily to test the server. eventually I want my abc.com to be the default domain to send once I decide to make it production.

I want users to have emails accounts with abc.com and xyz.com. I want users to login at xyz.com and abc.com and have their user's mailbox per domain user1@xyz.com and user1@abc.com. How do i do this? I created another domain but I believe that domain is just an alias domain.

Thanks.
