just an information for me ...
when you started the export from outlook, were you connected with the outlook-connector or with the imap ?

Thanks Miche

outlook connector, i.e. wanted to get all the special folders too.

Zafara is nice, don't overlook Zimbra though. VMware owns that and has done wonders with it.

C'mon guys ... so no love for MS?

We used to (and still do for a few users) run Hosted Scalix ... now running Exchange 2010 for hosting ... working great for us - really rock solid.

We've found since Exch 2007, mailbox stores have been stable.

Cheers

For small installations it is ok, but if you need Exchange Enterprise for distributed nodes in different locations it is not affordable.

My biggest complaint with Exchange is cost. Not only for Exchange itself, but for all of the products needed to go with it, especially the backup options. With Scalix, backup and restore was a cakewalk, even for Public Folders. With Exchange, to be able to pick and choose items to restore in a Public Folder requires about $1000 worth of software from what my research has yielded.

totally agree, unless you go down the Enterprise route and become a strong MS house the cost is prohibitive.
I have also found that since 2007 and 2010 things have got a lot more stable in Exchange, my only issues are message tracking and having everything hidden behind GUIs. Again, things are a lot better now that MS are looking more like unix "under the hood" with powershell/EMS, and thats a must if you want to administer larger systems :D

Such a shame, I have always been a strong advocate for Openmail/Contact/Scalix from a technical standpoint, and there is still mileage left in the old girl yet, IF it gets some money pumped into it and some good support.

Currently evaluating this one too and so far I really like what I see :D
(have not tried or seen their Scalix Migration tool though, I was planning to use outlook to move the user's data around)

The other one I think that's worth a closer look would be Kerio Connect, which is not open-source but they are more open about their development process than Scalix so that's not really a problem...

Don't try pst export/import. It doesn't work (at least in my case). When i tried it for a client, the export and import "finished without error" i ended up (later finding out from the end users) with missing mail in multiple random folders. Then when i re-ran the import pst with "dont import duplicates" it still duplicated. I ended up having to drag and drop folders via imap and pst export/import the calendar and contacts manually.

Same is seen here. Also, To: (or From:) headers also don't appear correct with the Scalix LDAP name showing in the Email address: field.

Read between the lines in Floridan's post. As to what's really going on at Scalix/Xandros/Seebring, I think if you carefully analyze the situation, the information given including some of the facts found in this thread, other threads and Bugzilla and know a little about the business world you can see how no news is really bad news. I'd post my well founded speculation but that's forbidden by the non-written rules.

A few comments on how my transition went (it's now finished and I've very enthusiastically entered "omshut" a week or so ago)

I tried going the manual route, by drag&dropping all mails/folders/contacts/... in Outlook manually into a local PST and then re-uploading them into the new server.

However, lots of mail messages and in some cases also the contacts were corrupt and while it was possible to move the mails to the local storage PST, it was afterwards neither possible to upload them to the new server or to move/copy them to a different local storage PST. I'm not very surprised though, since my users have complained several times in the last years that sometimes mails could not be opened or not be deleted - Scalix has a habbit of corrupting mails occasionally...

My workaround: Accessing Mails using IMAP worked perfectly fine - those corruption problems are just in Outlook (tried both 2003 and 2007 - made no difference, also sxmboxexp and sxmboximp didn't fix the corruptions in the mails).

I first tried moving the mails with Thunderbird, but Thunderbird is just horrible when moving large amounts of mails (it just stops in the middle of a move without any error and then you have things partially copied but not removed from the source).
I then tried using Outlook (2007 or 2010, not sure now which one i used for that) to move the IMAP mails but I encountered some problems there too (don't remember what exactly).

Finally I found Mailstore Home (http://www.mailstore.com/en/mailstore-home.aspx) which is a free Backup Utility for Mails that can among several other protocols download and upload mails using IMAP.

And that one then finally worked perfectly and I was able to rescue almost all mails from the scalix server to move them on to greener pastures. I can really recommend MailStore Home - it's reliable, free and perfectly suited for this job :D

The only problems I had using this "IMAP" way of moving the user's data to the new system:
- extremely large emails, some users had a few mails with something like 150MB-200MB attachments. Might have been a size limitation on the new system I was moving stuff to.
- IMAP doesn't support folders with a "/" in the name, if those exist in Outlook they will not be visible in IMAP, so you might miss them when moving them this way! (by the way: If you had such folders in Scalix they were also missing in Activesync)
- flags for mails, such as whether a mail had already been forwarded or replied to were lost by transitioning this way (not a major problem, but some users noticed)
- some mails with the outlook flag "important" set somehow got duplicated in IMAP (?!?) - was only the case for a couple of mails and I fixed this by comparing manually whether they were already on the target system or not.

For the non-mail-items:
I used manual Outlook drag&drop for Calendars & Contacts which was a bit tedious but worked fine mostly. For some of the users with contacts that were "corrupt" I did an sxmboxexp und sxmboximp which fixed the contact problems if I recall correctly. It might not have helped though (I don't remember exactly) and I already had written a small C# program that could read the contacts from outlook and then write them again to a different outlook-profile (on the new server). Not really sure if the export/import would have been enough therefor since I allready had this solution ready.

Overall the process was a bit time-consuming but I'm quite sure now that all data on the new system is free of corruptions caused by Scalix. I'm happy with the results, finally I've got an ActiveSync Solution that does actually work as it should (Scalix-Activesync on the iPhone was NEVER showing all users in the contacts folder and sometimes randomly the calendars stopped working for no apparent reason - not to mention that it just doesn't work at all for Nokia Users).

By the way: I did the transition over a couple of weeks and used fetchmail to transmit mails from the already-migrated users to the new system. For the few public folders that I was only able to move in the end I just told the already-migrated-users to use Scalix-Webaccess in the meantime to access those if they really needed to.

Oh, and one final trick: If you sxmboximp a backup file to a new empty user: I would highly suggest to disable indexing for this empty-recovery-user before importing - otherwise the import will cause a huge load of indexing processed that you probably won't need... (the commands to do so are somewhere here in the forum I think)

Thanks for sharing your notes on transition. Nice to know about mailstore home.

I've done a few more transitions now, would have liked not to have to do this but ultimately no choice.

When i migrated mail, i did the following:

1. export calendar, contacts and notes to same pst file from scalix (these special folders do appear to export properly). - sidebar - why cant you export multiple folders at once with pst export in outlook? seems like a reasonable thing to do, wish M$ would add this.
2. change to exchange profile, add imap account for scalix to same profile.
3. drag and drop from scalix imap direct to exchange mailbox. (you should only have to copy once)
4. public folders - drag and drop via imap scalix direct into exchange public folders.

Notes: when i dragged and dropped i "copied" incase all hell broke loose and mail got screwed up. i could delete and start again.
Yep, also had issues with folder names with "/" in them. You need to rename first. - sidebar - it seems ridiculous that Outlook let's you create folders with characters that mail servers cannot handle. How about some standards M$? ;)
i tried imapsync, but it was hit and miss. I wanted as close to 100% as possible, manual imap moving was the best way to achieve this. In some cases though, especially with loads of folders, i synced via imapsync and then just manually accounted for errors reported.
its long and laborious, but what can you do.... ;)

I found exporting mail from Scalix 11 and Outlook 2003/2007 to be unreliable. The export would sometimes fail but but you would not know where it had failed. In this case I would have to create a local PST file and drag and drop mail items in batches. This would let me isolate bad messages- usually ones with bad attachments (mostly from the same internal sender.) When I reimported into Exchange, the internal e-mail messages would be screwed up (they would show up as X400 or something similar.) This could be an issue if someone receive a message from a coworker on monday, migrated to exchange on tueday, then tried replaying to the message on wed. If you are in IMAP mode (vs MAPI mode) when exporting the mail from outlook you don't have this problem. I don't think it is really that big of a problem if you give the users a heads-up (my company is relatively small with a mostly computer-savvy employees.) FYI- you would have the same issue if you exported your Exchange e-mail to have a backup at home on machine with Outlook not connecting to your exchange server.

I do not represent this company, but have used their product and can vouch for its usefulness and so am posting this as a service to others that might be migrating from Scalix (or Groupwise, etc.) to MS Exchange or Google Apps. Cloud Technology Solutions is a UK company that offers, among other things, this migration tool: http://www.cloudsolutions.co.uk/resources/migration-tool/

Cheers!

While I still think that its inappropriate to discuss migration topics in this forum I have to comment the latest reply regarding the "Cloud migrator" product.

Choosing an API based migration tool may be acceptable for items that have been created through the API. Outlook users will loose some informations.

My users did not, but as always, YMMV.
