Large number of orphans in omscan -a output

Postby stevemurphy » Wed Jan 18, 2006 2:23 pm

Recently had a user report that calendar entries have been disappearing from her calendar today. I tired having her logout of SWA and log back in and the entries were still not there. I also tried logging into outlook as this user and could not see the calendar entries.

Based on her saying that she did not delete the messages, it would seem like this might be caused by corruption of scalix's data directory, but I have no idea how to recover the data. I also do not have any other users complaining, so it seems like she might have deleted the entries herself. ;) Anyway...

I tried running omscan to see if there were any issues and it returned a larger than normal amount of orphan files. Is there anything I can do to reconnect these orphan files to the appropriate user? Or are orphans in omscan output normal and I should ignore these errors?

The orphan section of omscan is below:

Hi,

Unless omscan reports that something is missing (e.g. missing children), the orphans may not be connected to the problem at all. May be worth running omscan regularly and clear out the orphans to see if the two events are related. Also worth checking the fatal log file to see if there is any error (probably from the UAL).

Hope that helps,
Danny

what is the best way to "clear out" orphans. Do I just delete the files? or do I use omscan?

Yes running omscan would do this for you, details of omscan capabilities are listed in its
man page. Ideal way to perform omscan steps are as below:

Code: Select all

omoff -d0 omscan
omscan -Z
omon omscan

You need to watch the status of the omscan process using the command:

Code: Select all

omscan -t

Wait until you get a message that says "Current server cycle not started;
service reset or delayed".

Now try to fix the mailstore related issues in active mode using the
below given command:

Code: Select all

omscan -Aavfx -U <username>

Thanks,
Subir
