Auto-Archiving old emails

I tried OL's auto-archive routine today. After I told OL to archive messages older than 6 months and clicked 'apply these settings to all email folders now', I was met with a message telling I didn't have permissions to complete the action.
Is that something that has to be done on the server side? I have over 1400 messages in my inbox. I don't want to delete them, but I really don't have like having that many either....
I am using OL 2003 BTW.

Hi,
I think this is happening because you've applied these settings to "all" folders, which means Public Folders too. So, to get around this, apple your archive settings per/folder.

So I tried setting the archives 'per folder' as suggested. I do not get the permission error, but no messages are actually being archived either.
An 'archive folders' is created with all my sub-folders, but even when I try to manually run an archive routine, nothing ever appears in them.

This might be happening because the "modified date" on the messages you are trying to archive is less than 6 months old. Add this field to the message pane in OL and see if this is the case...

I ahve the 'clear messages older than' set to '6 months'. ANd I have emails in my inbox going back to April of '05.

It doesn't matter. The archive feature looks at the "Modified" date, not the received or sent date.
Add this field and see what the Modified date is for the messages that are not getting archived.

Ahh, I see now! Once I added the 'modifeid' field to OL, the oldest message is only 11-05. That's the day I went live with the Scalix server. So I guess I will have to wait for a few months.
Thanks.
