Accessing Scalix using 2 ip addresses - URGENT!

Postby Shaun » Mon Mar 31, 2008 4:39 am

Hi everyone,

I have a scalix 11.1 server, which sits on both an internal network, and the internet. I would like to access this machine, using webmail and the scalix connector, but I understand that I need to be able to resolve the name of the server. I can do this via the host file, but for a laptop user, this becomes problematic, as whilst in the office, they would need to access it via the internal network, but when out of the office, they would need to access it via the internet - in both cases of course, the IP address would be different.

has anyone had any success with laptop clients accessing scalix this way? Did you use 2 ip addresses entries in the host file, or is there a better way?

This is quite urgent, so any help is greatly appreciated

Use DNS. Set up a DNS server in your office, and also make it resolvable from outside your network, then your laptop users will connect to the correct IP every time.

Thanks for the reply.

If I did this, would I have to have 2 entries in the DNS server for the Scalix server? One for it's external address and one for it's internal address?

Sorry if the question seems stupid!

because you're scalix server is internal i recommend you use 2 dns zones, one internal and one external on an isp. This will be necessary if you ever move to 11.3.

Have your external zone file with your isp or dyndns or wherever you want and fill it with all records.

then create an identical zone file on an internal server using bind, but when you put in the ip address for your scalix server make it the internal ip instead. When clients login locally have dhcp tell them to use the internal dns server for resolving.

Both zones have to be your domain name for this to work.

it may seem messy, but its the easiest way around this scenario, especially with 11.3 and its changes in dns resolution.

Hmmn..

I'm getting round this at the moment by having people use webmail only whilst out of the office and using the external address, whcih I've mapped in their hosts file to a different name - i.e. fred.wibble.com, rather than barney.wibble.com - which seems to work for basic webmail...

Can you clarify - what has changed in 11.3 regarding DNS resolution?
