IMAP keeps prompting for password

Postby KimVette » Tue Mar 18, 2008 5:10 pm

Hi all,

I have a scalix install in production and it has been working pretty well for a long time but very recently my account started prompting me for the password repeatedly. I'm using Thunderbird via IMAP. I have blown away the profile and recreated it and the issue is still occurring so I tried kmail to rule out client issues.

I queried google on the problem and I saw reference to the session manager. So I pulled up the session manager and see log entries as follows:

Code: Select all

I searched the forums on this issue and found a couple of potential fixes, one of which is to run omtidyu on the affected mailbox. I have done so and am still running into the same issue.

I have also tried restarting the imap daemon and issued an /etc/init.d/scalix restart

What should I try next?

Platform:

Scalix 10.0.1.3
OpenSuSE 10.0

Kind regards,

The problem is Thunderbird. Happens to me every time my remote mail server is unavailable, by internet outage or downtime, and it tries to connect. It fails and promptly forgets the username and password, forcing you to re-enter them.

A very annoying problem, see the link below...

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Password_not_ ... hunderbird)

p.s. the above url comes from the mozillazine site, you need to add "(Thunderbird)" on the end of it for it to work. What an awful way to write a url.

If it is a consistent issue then you need to look at why imap is inaccessible, internet connection quality etc etc.

I highlighted a key item in my original post in this thread. The problem does not appear to be Thunderbird, because as mentioned in my original post, the problem is also occurring in kmail, which does not rely or call Thunderbird components in any way.

when the problem re-occurs can you do the following and post the output....

telnet yourmailservername 143

type in....

"1. login username password"

does it show login successful or not?

"2. logout" will close the imap session.

Is it just your account or does it happen to others?

also you can increase logging for imap by....

editing /var/opt/scalix/sys/general.cfg

# Enable imap debug logging. See /var/opt/scalix/xx/tmp for output files
IMAP_LOGLEVEL=3

and restarting at least the imap daemon.

hope that helps.

a login {username} {password}
a OK LOGIN completed, now connected to mail.biyn.local

Yes, at the moment I can log in. However, Thunderbird will sometimes connect, sometimes not. Ditto for kmail. Two different Thunderbird revisions, one being 1.5.x the other being 2.0.x.

If I can't connect, I ssh to the server, kill all imap41d processes, restart imap (omoff -d0 imap; omon imap) and try connecting, I can then connect, but the problem recurs very soon thereafter.

"2. logout" will close the imap session.

Is it just your account or does it happen to others?

I am the only one noticing the issue. I can create a new account and test on that tomorrow, or access another user's account.

also you can increase logging for imap by....

editing /var/opt/scalix/sys/general.cfg

# Enable imap debug logging. See /var/opt/scalix/xx/tmp for output files
IMAP_LOGLEVEL=3

and restarting at least the imap daemon.

I'll report back tomorrow, or the next day (on the road much of the day tomorrow). Thanks for helping! Right now I'm not encountering the issue.

Are the logs showing the same messages as your original post? is there anything else in the fatal log?

10.0.1 is pretty old, i know that in 11 there were some issues with imap and defunct processes being left behind. But they were fixed by 11.2.

it might be that your hitting a connection rate limit, or signon limit, but then those errors are usually clearly defined in the logs (although i cant remember back to version 10, that was so long ago... ;) )

try adjusting the following in general.cfg to see if it helps....

# Specifies the number of simultaneous signons that a user can have.
# The default is 17.
MAX_SIGNON_PER_USER=30

# connections for each IMAP session. The IMAP_CONNRATE_LIMIT restricts
# the rate at which clients can connect to the server, in this case, at
# most ten connections per second; if clients try to connect faster
# than that, the IMAP server simply slows down the rate at which it will
# accept new connections.
IMAP_CONNECTION_LIMIT=500
IMAP_CONNRATE_LIMIT=15

Unfortunately I am so swamped I do not have the time to upgrade. However I only very recently began to encounter this issue, starting early last week. Since there have been no server changes recently it is unlikely

current settings as of yesterday:

Code: Select all

IMAP_CONNECTION_LIMIT=500
IMAP_CONNRATE_LIMIT=20

MAX_SIGNON_PER_USER was not present so I entered it, with the value you recommended.

Note: third error block above was posted after adding MAX_SIGNON_PER_USER and rebooting.

Another log. . .

Postby KimVette » Thu Mar 20, 2008 3:36 pm

OK it happened again. This time, I telnetted in on port 143 - could not log in as me. I logged in as another user. The first login was a failure - this was due to a typo. I typed it more carefully the second time and it authenticated the other user. I then logged out and telnetted back in, and again could not log in under my username.

Re: Another log. . .

I typed it more carefully the second time and it authenticated the other user. I then logged out and telnetted back in, and again could not log in under my username.

The problem is definitely isolated to your account.

Please do the following....

logout of mail completely.
find out your system login...

omshowu -f -n "Kimberley Lazarski"

do a ps -ef |grep <system_login_number>

kill any left over imap processes under your system login.

go to your "user folder" (see the omshowu command from earlier)

i.e. /var/opt/scalix/user/g00003b

and delete the imap-cache directory.

Then run a complete omscan in full fix mode over your mailbox.

omscan -Aafvx -U "Kimberley Lazarski"

Once thats all done log back in.

One other question.... do you have any public folders in use here? If so can you confirm that you have permissions to access them, especially at the root level?

The omscan command you provided didn't work so I did this instead:

Code: Select all

omscan -Avx -U "Kimberly Lazarski"

The problem still occurred so I am trying this now:

Code: Select all

omscan -Afvx -U "Kimberly Lazarski"

interesting that you didn't have an imap-cache directory. perhaps thats a version 11 thing only, i dont have any version 10 sites anymore so i cannot verify. Version 10 must have done things differently. Do any other accounts have imap-cache directories?

Likewise the omscan command is from version 11, check the man pages in version 10 for appropriate switches, but what you've run should help.

I don't have it running with SSL.

Also, no other accounts have imap-cache directories. There are no imap-cache directories on the server anywhere.

There is always imap-cache on the server for every account, in fact I don't even know if it's possible not to have this thing.

On previous occasions when I have password problems with Thunderbird they always related to the encryption scheme I selected on the secure connection preferences. I found out that when I use SSL or TLS and in addition "Use secure authentication" the password got encrypted "twice in the row" and the server didn't know what to do with it. So, either you don't use secure connection (no SSL or TLS) and use secure authentication for the password or the other way around.
