HELO localhost.localdomain Issue FIXED

Postby kmcelwain » Thu Feb 21, 2008 9:12 am

We got listed on CBL because of this....is there a way to resolve this?

Note: 168.8.28.2 was found to be using the following name as the HELO/EHLO
parameter during connections:

localhost.localdomain

Which is an illegal name according to the RFC2821 SMTP mail
protocol standards. RFC2821 requires that the machines claim names
that are a fully qualified domain names or IP addresses enclosed
in square brackets.

Wow, I was tinkering and realized that I took the following line out of my host config

168.8.28.2 mail mail.banks.k12.ga.us

Below you can see the difference in the header info. The first one is without the additional line....the second is with it.

This may break other things on your server, though. I would be careful to remove this, as the RFC (IIRC) states that each hop must be accounted for, and delivering to localhost is perfectly legal in an LMTP environment.

You can also try to strip it off at the border gateway, or via a sendmail milter. Not sure how to go about this, though.

Well I emailed the CBL abuse people and they seemed much happier with my current configuration. Everything seems to be working just fine....so cross those fingers.
