Scalix 11.0.3 imap crash

Postby jethro.carr » Mon Feb 18, 2008 5:51 pm

hi all,

Had a problem with a Scalix 11.0.3 server this morning, where imap and the mime browser start spitting out errors.

Result was that users could login, and see that they had email, but were unable to open any in webmail.

Below is a capture of the log. The first non-normal message was the connection rate exceeded, then there were a number of errors with different browser processes, finally the IMAP service errors. The imap errors continued to repeat until I finally killed off the scalix processes, and brought the server back online.

This server is running 11.0.3, so it's possible it may be fixed in 11.3, although I couldn't see anything in the release notes that sounded related. I am actually scheduled to upgrade this server to 11.3 in the next couple of weeks, but decided it's worth posting this here, incase it's an unknown issue. :-)

Hi Jethro

Two things com to mind

First check the number of IMAP processes running
ps aux |grep IMAP

If this seems excessive kill them all. Hey IMAP clients will try to log in again so thats OK

Second. You may need to flush / recreate the IMAP cache. There are plenty of posts in this forum about that.

Thry that for starters.

Mike

Thanks Mike,

I resolved the problem by killing all the scalix and imap processes when it occured, and brought the system back online without a problem. :-)

I'm not looking for a fix to get me up and running again, I'm looking to see if anyone else has seen a bug like this, or at the least, bring it to the attention of Scalix.

there were bugs fixed since 11.0.3 which related to better handling of defunct imap processes and also improvements in imap in general.

11.3 is significantly faster in imap access.

I had similar issues with other clients on older 11 series releases. The problems disappeared after upgrading.
