On previous occasions when I have password problems with Thunderbird they always related to the encryption scheme I selected on the secure connection preferences. I found out that when I use SSL or TLS and in addition "Use secure authentication" the password got encrypted "twice in the row" and the server didn't know what to do with it. So, either you don't use secure connection (no SSL or TLS) and use secure authentication for the password or the other way around.

What version do you have?
Upgrading has always been fairly straight forward for us.
Just do th tar of the message store
sxmboxexp if you want. If your upgrading from v10.x this may be a good idea
run omscan -Aafvx the night before to get the message store consistant
then do the upgrade

Well I just ran omscan on the entire store AGAIN today, then rebooted the box. Couldn't get to my mailbox. I didn't worry about it since others could get in. Came home tonight, tried to check email, couldn't get in, so I logged in as admin. Found my account was now locked. Toggled it a couple of times, now it seems to be working.
Very odd.
As far as updating: I am on OpenSuSE 10.0. I'll need to upgrade to 10.2 or move over to CentOS 5.
