Monitorig mail - new install

Postby rgmhtt » Wed Apr 05, 2006 4:43 pm

I just switched my MX record over to my Scalix server and the mail is flowing in.

Well some of it, as DNS around the world has to update, and my ISP needs to change their relay config....

So. I am getting a lot less junk! And I don't think I set up spamassasin....

Now I did check the knowledge base, and searched here but probably just did not have the right keywords.

How do I real-time monitor the incoming message processing?

Can I 'look' into a user's inbox (and where is it on the server)

thanks.

PS

The OUTLOOK SMTP send from the admin of the domain I am supporting seems NOT to be an OUTLOOK or SCALIX problem that I bothered everyone here with. SMTP out is blocked, except to the old mailserver. They have to open it up to the new server.

Hi,

I am not sure what you mean with realtime, but if you want a visual overview of activity, check out rrdtool, mrtg, Big Brother or Nagios.

Looking into peoples mailboxes is priviledged information and only available to Enterprise customers thru support, but yes - it can be done. We don't share that information on the forum here, though.

Cheers,

Sascha.

I want to be able to see 'events' as they happen.

Also logs.

I have looked at the logging part for services via SCA, but they all seem to be empty.

A nice mixed bag...

Since all my users are POP3 users (and I am thinking of turning off IMAP to save memory), this is for looking into problems that mail pulls are failing. Once they have POPed their mail, they don't leave them on the server.

But then I can honestly say that I have no access to messages sitting on my server before the user pulls them. Or rather I don't have the tools nor resources to get said tools. And if you really want those messages, you will have to provide me with everything needed.....

Not that the gov has been after me, but given where my voice is heard, this is good...

The I would suggest using TCPDump and Chaosreader:

As far as logs go, have you actually enabled them? As I recall, the logs can be pretty verbose if you turn up the logging level, although the default is to have most logging turned off. Just make sure you restart the necessary services and then turn down the logging when you've finished, or you may find yourself short of disk space.

If you're concerned about whether your MX records and the like are OK, head over to http://www.dnsreport.com and enter your domain name.
