Scalix on an "active" domain

Postby jonny » Wed Mar 22, 2006 6:15 pm

Okay, so here's a fun on for you - newbie to Linux but learning quickly, so sorry in advance!

We currently host all our mail on our ISP's machines as POP-3 boxes. I am looking to move the entire solution inhouse via Scalix, but obviously want to run it in a test enviorment with me and a few other "tech savvy" users for a few months first.

Our domain comprises of a Windows2k Domain Controller (which handles the DNS and Active Directory).

So, I install scalix on the domain, set up the DNS correctly so it resolves both ways and is working perfectly - I'm very pleased. I ask our ISP to create a mail feed for us and I open the correct ports on the router (25 & 80) and again everything works great - I can send and recieve mail outside the domain and inside the domain to other "test" users on the scalix box.

Now the problem occurs when I am trying to send to a user of one of the POP-3 boxes hosted by the ISP - it's resolving to the same domin, so the scalix server just rejects it as an "unknown user" and it never gets to the intended recipient.

Is there any way to tell Scalix (sendmail ?) to push any unkown mail to the external mailserver (our ISP's) which will handle routing it to the correct POP box. Thsi will allow me to fully test Scalix with selected users before moving everyone over to it and cancelling the POP boxes with the ISP.

Hope this is not too confusing and thanks in Advance.
Jonny.

Well, you can try the following:

1) Remove the entry for your domain from /etc/mail/local-host-names

2) Add an entry for your domain to /etc/mail/mailertable

Code: Select all

domain.com<TAB>esmtp:[hostname.of.ISP.mail.server]

Please note the use of []'s in there. That disables MX lookups (important to do).

3) Run make in /etc/mail and restart sendmail

However, please note that is your provider's server is NOT set as final destination for the domain, and tries to forward the mails back to you you have a mail loop that will interfere with normal operations.

Thanks for the reply, Valerion.

1. There was no entry for domain.com in the local-host-names file, however I did add an entry for mail.domain.com (which is my test server).

2. added that to the mailertable and ran make.

Thankyou, that worked great! I think I'm almost ready to start rolling this out to a few test users!

Jonny.
