Last time this happened (sometime in 2009) a restart of the scalix & sendlmail fixed the problem too.
It does cause some havoc though - as it makes sendmail create and then send (once the system has restarted) delivery notification messages to some of the attempts to spam the server - ie normally sendmail rejects email for other domains, yet with the ldapmapper non responsive it tries to send 'Warning: could not send message for past 1 hour' email messages (to the forged from addresses) where it would have normally rejected the delivery attempt entirely.
