Have I solved this ongoing SMTP problem?

As some of the Scalix support people know, I have been having some ongoing problems with the SMTPD service. It seemed to stop an random times and did not want to start again. I have thought I had found the solution a few times, but it would always start acting up again.

Today, motivated by the SMTPD being down again, I starting reading every post that even mentioned the SMTPD service. I found one post that referred to the etc/hosts files missing the 127.0.0.1 entry. The Scalix support person said the the 127.0.0.1/localhost entry should always be there.

I checked mine, and I had no entry for localhost. So I have added it....

My question is, do you think that this could have been the cause of my problem all along? And why would the server work at all is the localhost entry was missing?
