backup software recommendations?

Postby heupink » Tue Feb 22, 2005 7:34 am

dear readers,

I searched the forum for 'backup' and did not find much interesting...

My question: is arcserve 11.1 a supported backup program? As far as I can see, scalix supports "Veritas, Legato and others"... Does "and others" include ArcServe?

Will I be able to do something like "bricklevel" in exchange? (Meaning: Backup and restore single messages from mailboxes?)

Do I need a special 'agent', or other software? Anything I need to keep into consideration..? I have installed scalix on a lvm volume, as suggested by the install procedure. Do I need to do anything else..?

Thanks for input!

Scalix doesn't necessarily have a recommendation for a backup solution. The only requirement we have is that, if you decide to implement the Single User Restore Utility (as described on page 79 of the Scalix Administration Guide), your restore solution has the ability to restore single named files from a list.

Cheers

It looks, judging from your message and administration guide, as if single message restore is NOT possible, just single USER restore. Is this correct?

So, if a user accidentally erased an email, I will not be able to restore that particular email from the backup? (or anyway.. not easily..?)

The title is probably a misnomer.

SUR provides the ability to restore missing files from backup. The process involves comparing the current mailbox to a snapshot of the mailbox structure at a point of time in the past. A list of missing files is constructed and those files need to be restored from backup. Once the files are restored, SUR converts them to an omcpinu image which you can then import into the mailbox.

For the files to be restored, they have to have been backed up first. SUR doesn't allow you to recover files if they have been created and deleted before the next backup.

Cheers

Dave.
