OpenSuse and x64 Based Systems

Postby yellowplum » Sun Feb 05, 2006 3:55 pm

Sirs,

I wonder if I can get some clarity on an issue that I have seen numerous differing responses to.

We are currently using OpenSuse 10 for Linux on an AMD x64 architecture server, and have running the x64 version of Linux.

I wanted to clarify two things; firstly does Scalix Community Edition run on OpenSuse?

Secondly, does it run on OpenSuse x64, regardless of whether Scalix is a 64bit or just 32bit program?

The reason for the confusion is that I have seen responses on this forum stating that Scalix does not run on OpenSuse 10 but Suse 9.3 and vice versa. However, I have not found a response to state whether Scalix as a 32bit version does or does not run on a 64bit OS platform in 32bit mode.

If it does run, great!

If it doesn’t is there a plan to make it so it can run, regardless of mode? If so what is the timeframe?

Hello,

currently, Suse Professional 9.3 and SLES 9 are the certified and tested platforms. We realise that customers will want to run on alternative and newer platforms, however we need to tightly couple our release schedule and QA cycles together. Hence, Opensuse 10 support will come with our next release, scheduled for the end of the month.

That said, many customers have found that editing /etc/SuSE-release and replacing "10" with "9.3" will trick our installer and things seem to work for them.

A definite statement regarding 64bit support will be made at a later point in time.

Cheers,

Sascha.

I use Evolution running on Kubuntu. Will the Scalix Connector also work with my Linux OS?

What you have stated is that x64 will be decided at a later date, but in another post (I realised after I posted the original posting that I had placed it in an incorrect arena) I was told that Scalix V10 will run on a FC4 X64 and OpenSuse V10 X64 but only as a 32bit app. Is this the case? I am not really concerned at this time whether or not your product utilises 64bit functionality or not, I am however concerned whether it will run on a 64bit OS.

See previous response from another Scalix Support User at http://www.scalix.com/community/viewtop ... =5575#5575

This clearly states that the Scalix will run on a 64bit OS in 32bit Mode.

However, what you have stated above is full of ambiguity and does not clearly define the question that was originally asked, as answered by another support member.

So the question is will Scalix 10 run on an X64 based OS?

Hello,

I think I have managed to confuse you with too much detail ;-)

With the shipping product, there is no 64bit support. Scalix 9.4 only runs on 32bit Intel x86 platforms.

Scalix 10 is technically not announced, but has been talked about in this forum.

That release will add support for the 64bit platforms I named RUNNING AS A 32bit app.

What I meant with "a definite statement regarding 64 bit support" was misphrased. It should have read: "Let me check the 10 sys req's real quick and I'll add something definite in a minute or so". I did not incline to add any mystery to it. There is none.

I hope that clears it up.

Cheers,

Sascha.
