IMAP features

Postby th14 » Sat Dec 17, 2005 10:41 pm

Hi,

I notice TLS/SSL is not implemented for IMAP, and a previous post suggesting using stunnel (which works fine for the moment). Is there a forthcoming release that will have this feature (as well as TLS for SMTP)?

Also, I haven't seen it mentioned in the Admin guide, but does the IMAP service on Scalix support IMAP alerts and Quota reporting? Using Thunderbird's "IMAP Quota" plugin it doesn't report anything, so is it something that can be enabled or is it just not implemented?

For any truly enterprise class product I would suggest these features are a must ;-)

Regards

Hi,

on the SSL/TLS thing, a large number of customers are using stunnel successfully and happily for both IMAPS and smtp over TLS or SSL; the request to provide this internally with the product has been logged, but is currently kept at relatively low priority because of good experience with the stunnel-based solution. Obviously, one of the benefits of the Linux platform is the possiblity to use best-of-breed components for common tasks.

Do you see any issues with using stunnel?

As for IMAP extensions, these specific two are currently not implemented in the Scalix IMAP service; I'm not an IMAP expert (even though I'm using T'bird myself, but then, I believe I currently don't have a quota on my mailbox), so maybe you can provide me with the RFC numbers for these and I'll log this as a request for a future release.

Cheers,
Florian.

I know about the IMAP QUOTA extension and the possibility of implementing it has come up a few times -- it just hasn't made it high enough up the list of things to do yet. Of course, just becuase the QUOTA extension isn't implemented doesn't mean that there aren't any quotas -- see omlimit(8).

IMAP alerts has me puzzled though. I know about the untagged ALERT response for the base IMAP protool (I use it to warn of impending shutdown) but last time I tested it, Thunderbird studiously ignored it. What am I missing?
