sendmail fails to send or receive mail (unix.in error)

Postby serpico2201 » Mon Jun 25, 2007 9:27 am

I installed Scalix 11.0.4 on SuSE OSS 10.1. Everything works fine, only sendmail won´t send or receive mail. It will always produce the following error:

SYSERR(root): Cannot exec /opt/scalix/bin/unix.in: Operation not permitted
smtpquit: mailer scalix_mime exited with exit value 69

Then the mail-receiving/sending is deferred.
I checked the file-permissions. They seem to be OK. It´s: r-s.r-s.r-x root.scalix.
I checked this also on a working installation I have access to. I reinstalled the whole machine, but the error remains.
By the way, I don´t use any smarthost (like in a similar thread on this forum), so the problem can´t be related to this.
Any suggestions where I could look this one up ???

This doesn't look like a sendmail problem. In fact I'm almost 100% sure it's something with scalix or an entry missing in a config file somewhere else.

To test sendmail to the following:
1) tail -f /var/log/maillog
2) use the command line Mail to *send* an email (remove scalix from the equation).
Example: Mail -s "bypassing scalix" externaluser@externaldomain.com
3) check the tail report and check the external mail to see that the email made it to the recipient. You should get an email from "root@scalixserver.yourdomain.com". That should tell you whether or not the *send* part of sendmail is working.

4) to check the receiving part keep watching the tail, and reply to "root@yourdomain.com". If you see a hit in the tail log the receiving part is working. Look for trouble somewhere else in scalix, local-host-names, etc. If you don't see a hit, be suspicious of DNS.

Thanks for the reply.

I could actually narrow down the problem to SUSE 10.1.
It was the AppArmour-Thing, which gets mentioned in other postings, too.
Once disabled scalix works like a charm.
