License issue causing disruption

Postby btisdall » Fri Jun 15, 2007 12:03 pm

I have a client that's experiencing problems with licensing - they called me yesterday because attempting to provision a new full user (the current number being 56) was giving the following error:

Code: Select all

Could not get enough licenses to configure this user

At the time omstat -a was showing the licmon to be running and sxlicense gives (domains obfuscated):

Code: Select all

License Type: Permanent
Key Type: Scalix Standard
System Class: Multi-Server
Domain: xxxxx1
Domain: xxxxx2
Domain: xxxxx3
Domain: xxxxx4
Domain: jxxxxx5
Domain: xxxxx6
LVID: 2006-04-30
Premium Users: 60
Standard Users: unlimited
License File: ~/LicenseKeys/permanent.lic

They now also advise me that Scalix is rejecting mail on the third of their domains. Unfortunately they can't currently give me SSH access, so am awaiting output of omshowlog & the contents of /var/opt/scalix - any other avenues for me to consider apart from restarting Scalix (which I've advised them to do)?

Cheers,

Ben.

Ok, sxlicense -u shows:

Code: Select all

Local Usage

  Premium Users:     62
  Standard Users:      12

Totals
  Premium Users:     62
  Standard Users:      12

Somehow the premium quota has been allowed to be exceeded (or Scalix thinks it has). Would this cause the domain functionality to degrade as well as affecting user provisioning?

Yes if you go over your limit of premium users it will stop the multi-server stuff from functioning. I know it is pretty bad to do that.

I do not know exactly how to fix it. I would assume that you would need to get under your limit then recreate the dir sync agreements between servers, etc. You might be able to just restart the service and hopefully it will continue properly.

Well, it's only a single server setup so that makes it simpler. I have the client reconciling the user lists as produced by omshowu & omsearch so the users can be pruned & any rogue dir entries removed. I just hope there are no implications for data loss resulting from the temporary downgrade, that would be a pain.

Thanks Shredder.

Hi Ben.

It'll be fine. Fix the count, and then omshut && omrc, and you'll be fine. In single server, there'll be no real consequences. In multi-server this can be a bit ugly.

Thanks
Kev.

Thanks Kevin, that's reassuring.

What puzzles me is how the count was allowed to exceed the license allowance in the first instance.
