Is UAL secure?

Postby OliE » Mon Nov 07, 2005 4:22 pm

Hi,

I have two small questions:

1) Is the UAL(port 5729) connection secure over the internet? Transfer the data encrypted?
2) It not really necessary but can I run a command on the server when I press NewPost in webmail or in Outlook? (The background is that I will execute the fetchmail command, so I don't need to fetch mails every 5 minutes in domain mode and when you receive an important mail you need to wait in a worst case scenario 5 minutes)

Best Regards,
Oliver

Hello,

The UAL connection is not secure (there is no data encryption) over the internet. We recommend setting up and using a VPN in situations like this.

As for your second question, this is not possible on the Server...

But the user authentication portion of the connection is secure right?

Yes... The password is indeed encrypted. But, everything else is sent over the wire in plain text.

You can also use Kerberos for signing on with Outlook (aka SSO); that has some security advantages. With Kerberos the password isn't sent across the net in any form, encrypted or otherwise.

But Matthew is right -- for remote UAL (aka MAPI) access, use a VPN.
