backup/restore

So, although there are a bunch of suggestions on the web, how exactly does one backup and restore a scalix installation. Here's what I tried.

Installed FC5, fully updated.

dd the whole drive, verify that either drive boots into FC5

Installed Scalix server Open Source on primary drive, resolved all dependencies.

Created 2 users, sent a couple of emails between.

Started up on backup drive

Installed Scalix as before.

mounted the original HD and copied the entire contents of /var/opt/scalix to the same location on the backup HD.

Started tha admin console. Although the users names appeared in the console, they were unable to be accessed. ALso, those users could not log into webmail.

What did I miss? At this point, I just want to do a full backup for disaster recovery (Got to have this before I dare leave "test mode"). I'll deal with individual mailboxes later.

Thanks,
Kurt

Try copying over the /var/opt/scalix directory first, then install scalix, choosing to keep the existing mail store (or not overwrite existing mailstore, one of those two).

Thanks! I tried that last night with much more success. The mailboxes were there along with the mail. But I couldn't log into the management console. The error was "Could not retrieve the list of servers. There may be a problem with the administration server. You should check your logs." Where are the logs?

Thanks,

Kurt

Hmm ok, so you DD'd the drive, when you brought up the second one (the backup), did you keep the same IP address? Make sure the your /etc/hosts file has your ip and hostname in there.

127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.134 scalix-mail.domain.com scalix-mail

The machine has to think it is your original server name. So even if that is not it's dns name, locally it has to think it is.

Also, if you do:
omstat -a
omstat -s

are all services started or enabled (except Item Structure Server)?

Yes, the hostname, IP address, etc were all set up prior to the dd. The only thing left out of the mix was the installation of scalix 11 (11.0.3). I was able to get it to go if I installed Scalix before I dd the drive. Then I could create users, calendars, emails, etc at will and just copy the /var/op/scalix directory using "cp -rpu". Any other switches that I should be using?

I'll continue to experiment with restoring to a clean install, but for now, this is a workable alternative.

One last question: Where are the server logs located? filenames?

Thanks for the assistance,

Kurt
