Big problems sending attachments!!

Postby Noes » Mon Jan 01, 2007 5:24 pm

Hello all,

I have installed Scalix version 11 (production release) with 5 premium and 8 normal users.
Now I have big problems with sending mails with attachments (web access).

When I send mail without any attachment then there is no problem, the user gets the mail and the sending user can see the mail in the "sent" folder.
When I'm sending a mail with a attachment under the 10MB, I'll get sometimes the following situation.

I create the mail and place some attachments with it, then I click on the send button.
Then I can see for a few seconds that the mail go's out the "outbox".
After sending that mail, the user don't get the mail and I can NOT see the mail in the "sent" folder!!!!

I have looked in the log's and can't see a problem and there is nothing left in the queues.

This is a very hard problem,
Please help me with this problem!

Hello,

I have checked the smtpd-smtp.log.
When I send a mail without any attachment file the log-file wil be filled. When I send a mail with attachment (9mb) the log file won't be filled!!

Someone any idea?

Hi Niels!

Did you try sending an e-mail with a smaller attachment(s) may be of size 1-2MB or even
less? What was the result, did the recipient receive the e-mail with the attachment(s)? Could
you tell us what is the file type that you attached which has made upto 9MB?

Do you have firewall/anti-virus installed with the server?

Warm Regards,
Subir

tnx for the fast reaction!

Yes, I tried many mails with different sort of attachments. Most strange is that the problem also accour with smaller attachments!
I've had the problem with .rar .zip .exe an one mail with a few attachments (.xls .jpg .wri .doc .txt and pdf). The total size of that mail was 8mb.
(sometimes this mails going well!)
When I send this kind of mail(s) with attachments using outlook (oulook connector) then there is no problem. Only sometime the problem that a file like .mp3 arrives as .__

I've installed Scalix 11 defaullt without changing someting like virus scanners settings.
Are there any virusscanners or someting else active after a default installation?
where are the mails stying after the send mail is not arrived and it is not in the send box? (If there is some directory it must be full now  )

The attchment size is note the problem...what else can it be?
Did you have see the post about the smtpd log file?
Can I send any log file?

Many questions...sorry. I hope that you can do someting with this information.

Hi!

Yes I did see the smtpd.log post before replying. Firstly, a point to be noted is that,
make sure the smtpd log file does not reach a size of 2GB else you might end up into
further troubles. Turn off smtpd logging as soon as you are done with your testings.

I tried creating a test mail and while attaching large sized files to my test mail, I get a
prompt that says "The attachment(s) are too large. Their total size must be less than
10240KB
". Don't you get this prompt?

Can you tell me what is the value for swa.system.maxAttachmentUploadKilobytes in
"/var/opt/scalix/<xx>/webmail.swa.properties" file?

If the mail is not being sent, it might be getting rejected due to large mail size.

The guidelines for anti-virus or spam protection are available in the “Scalix Setup
and Configuration Guide" available at http://www.scalix.com/downloads/documentation.html.

Thanks,
Subir

Tnx Subir!

I've already turned off the smtpd log file, because the log file won't filled when the message problem accour...(that says enough, that the mail is NOT send)
This is the line in my swa.properties "swa.system.maxAttachmentUploadKilobytes=10240"
It looks good to me.
When I create a test message and upload any attachment that is larger (than 10240KB) I get the same message ("The attachment(s) are too large. Their total size must be less than 10240KB"). It doesn't like that the attachment size is the problem.

If the mail is not being sent, it might be getting rejected due to large mail size.

Can I find this out? Just to be sure. (see quote).

I hope that you can something with this information.. I'm very worried about this issue.
Mostly because the user thinks the message is sent.

With kind regards,

Niels

Hi Neils,

Do you get some log entries in catalina.out file available at /var/opt/scalix/<xx>/tomcat/logs
that relate to non-delivery of mail. If so, could you post them in your next mail.

Thanks,
Subir

Hi Surbir!

I've looked in the log file and don't see anyting like non-delivery or error sending.
Is there a way that I can sent you te log file(s)? Just in case I don't see the errors.
Today I tried two times after rebooting the server the folowing..

Step 1: Reboot the Scalix MailServer.
Step 2: Logged in using Webaccess.
Step 3: Create mail with attachment (9MB) and sent the mail. (the mail arrives succesfull)
Step 4: Create mail with attachment (9MB) and sent the mail. (the mail arrives succesfull)
Step 5: Create mail with attachment (9MB) and sent the mail. (this one fails. and the mail is not showed in the "sent box"

After rebooting the server I get the same situation again.

Hi..

I've done some more tests, but it isn't always the third time when the mail fails  .
Is there default some file extension check active? If there is, I suppose that the extension must blocked all the time.

Hi Neils!

This is a random behaviour, could you check if you get log entries in your /var/log/mail* log files when the mail delivery fails.

Thanks,

Hey Subir,

I run the Scalix-installation setup again, and selected reconfigure Scalix components.
After the (re)installation was finessed and I reboot the server, the problems are away!!
How is this possible? Was there maybe some service not good installed?

Hi Neils!

Its great that your issue is now resolved! There must be some issue, otherwise mail
transactions would have been sucessful the last time you installed Scalix.

After you selected reconfigure Scalix Components during re-install, can you tell us what
were the components/RPMs/packages that were installed?

Did you get any dependency issues the last time you installed Scalix?

You can refer to the installer log files in /var/log/scalix-installer-*.log for details.

Thanks,
Subir

Hi Subir!

Many tnx.. for your reactions!
The components I've reconfigured are:

scalix-postgres, scalix-tomcat, scalix-platform, scalix-res, scalix-swa, scalix-sac, scalix-sis, scalix-mobile

The last time I reconfigured the Scalix installation everything looks normal (same as before). Do you want also my old Scalix installation log file?

Here's my last (good) Scalix installation log file.

Hi Neils!

While reconfiguring Scalix installation, did you make any change in values for
hostnames/domain names/IP whenever you were prompted for? Like you must
have been prompted for Default mail domain and Server hostname at Management
Services screen. You must have been prompted for FQDN in Management Agent
Screen. SMTP server hostname at Web Access Server screen.

Thanks,
Subir

Hey Subir!

The last time I reconfigured Scalix I've made everything the same as it was before.
That's the reason why I don't understand what was wrong before the reconfiguring.
I'm very happy that it is working now, but it's sad that we don't found the problem.

Tnx for your support!

Greets Niels
