migrate users from linux standard sendmail mail service

Postby gordontin » Wed Dec 20, 2006 10:33 am

Dear all

I need to migrate 200 users from linux sendmail mailbox to scalix server.
linux server (standard)

Old mail service:
redhat 7
Mail service: standard sendmail
Users 200

Planned mail service
Redhat AS4 Scalix server
200 users from old server
------------------------------------------
Plan & Target:
1. migrate all previous users to scalix new server
2. Don't distribute user's service. (Their existing pop3 mailbox will work straight away.)
3. For those they haven't checked their mailbox at the migration period, we will move their unread email to scalix mailbox.

------------------------------------------
Difficulty
1. I can't read the hashed password of old linux server.
DOES ANYONE HAS ANY SOLUTION TO THIS?
2. I can't effectively move sendmail mail format to scalix mail format.
WOULD I BE ABLE CONVERT STANDARD LINUX FORMAT TO SCALIX MAIL FORMAT??
OR ANY EFFECTIVE SOLUTION TO THIS???

Presumably you have root access on the old mailserver? If so you could script a password change for all the users you need to migrate (of course you would probably need to do this in downtime). You could then migrate the mail using imapsync (if you only have pop3 on the box at present it would be pretty simple to install IMAP alongside it).

scripts password change

Postby gordontin » Thu Dec 21, 2006 1:24 pm

Dear Ben Tisdall

1. If i scripts a password change, i will have to change the password for 200 users. Changing the password on the server is OK but to contact them and make sure that they have successfully changed the password could be a difficult task.

Is it possible to undo the password in /etc/pasword?

Is there any other smart way to overcome this?

2. Thank you for the imapsync suggestion. I am not familar with it but i will look at more info on this.

Could i have your email address?
You can email yr email address to my mailbox gordontin@macausjm.com
