Scalix for a calendar/contact sharing situation

Postby DragonHost » Thu Oct 26, 2006 7:33 pm

Hey there,

I've been asked by a local business which runs a Linux server in their business for a way to share Outlook Contacts/Calendars throughout their network of 6-7 computers. A few products have been suggested to me by other forums but Scalix looks to be the easiest and most affordable for our needs.....if it can suit our needs.

The main question I have is can we use an install of Scalix just for Contacts & Calendars and not email. I do not believe the business needs an internal mail server and could continue to use what they have available already.

Your feedback on this topic would be appreciated.

Is no one able to help me with my query?

I would assume this isnt the case since quite alot of you work with the software on a daily basis.....I haven't even used the software and want to know the answer to a question before I do so id appreciate if someone was kind enough to respond.

Hi Dragon,

you could install Scalix and just use it for calenders and contacts but not for email.

However, how would your users accept/decline and generally respond to meeting requests?

It is quite easy to setup fetchmail to retrieve mail from your users' current pop3 accounts and deliver it to their Scalix accounts.

I imagine that your users would appreciate having everything in one interface anyway, rather than having to switch programs. That's the beauty of an integrated solution.

Thoughts?

Thankyou Chris for answering my question.

Due to the size and nature of the business they dont usually have the need for meeting requests but having thought over what you have just said it could be there for them to use in the future if they find the need.

If the system was setup for fetchmail retrieving the email and delivering to the Scalix accounts they would be able to login remotely and be able to check on email/calendars and look up contacts all in the one place.

I will keep it in mind and get a bit of a test rig going so that I can look at implementing it.
