Outgoing mail bouncing back

Postby bluemike » Wed May 24, 2006 4:57 pm

Can receive mail okay, but today all outgoing mail is generating this message:
anything I have changed is in [brackets]

Code: Select all

Message could not be delivered to following recipient:
[user] / internet/CN=[user]
DDT1-RFC-822; DDV1=[user@here.com];
because: 'A mail transport failure occurred' OM 9205

Domain of sender address [valid-recipient@valid-domain.com] does not exist.

I have recently created a new 'forward lookup zone' in Windows 2K3 DNS, so I suspect that has something to do with this.....

Hi Mike,

It very likely is your DNS. Can use send from the command line "mail" program? If you do an nslookup and "set type=mx" then try to lookup some of the domains you're trying to send to, what is returned?

Thanks,
Rachel

I'm not sure what you mean by 'the command line mail program'. However, I use nslookup (set type=mx) and try to get yahoo.com...

Here is the result:

Code: Select all

> yahoo.com
Server:  bigtim.bbpi-pdc.billsblue.com
Address:  192.168.111.5

Non-authoritative answer:
yahoo.com       MX preference = 1, mail exchanger = mx3.mail.yahoo.com
yahoo.com       MX preference = 5, mail exchanger = mx4.mail.yahoo.com
yahoo.com       MX preference = 1, mail exchanger = mx1.mail.yahoo.com
yahoo.com       MX preference = 1, mail exchanger = mx2.mail.yahoo.com

mx3.mail.yahoo.com      internet address = 4.79.181.13
mx3.mail.yahoo.com      internet address = 67.28.113.10
mx3.mail.yahoo.com      internet address = 64.156.215.8
mx3.mail.yahoo.com      internet address = 64.156.215.18
mx3.mail.yahoo.com      internet address = 4.79.181.134
mx3.mail.yahoo.com      internet address = 4.79.181.12
mx3.mail.yahoo.com      internet address = 67.28.113.11

...and a whole bunch more.

However, when I try to send to a valid yahoo.com address, I get the error message almost instantly.

Hi Mike,

The command line "mail" program is built in Linux mail program. You would type:

mail user@yahoo.com

Then enter a subject, hit enter and type a message, then end the message with a period (.) on a line by itself. It will then ask if you want to cc: anyone and you can just hit enter. Your message will then be sent.

If that message arrives in your Yahoo mailbox, then we need to go back a step to something that may have changed on your Scalix side. However, if that fails, then we should look more towards any sendmail, DNS and/or mail routing changes that may have been made. If the message to yahoo does bounce, you can see a copy in you Linux mailbox by just typing "mail" and looking at the highest numbered message. You should also take a look in your /var/log/maillog file and post the last 50 lines or so.

Thanks,
Rachel

I set my DNS server back to it's orignal settings and sent a message to myself at cmichalebaker@hotmail.com. Then I re-added the new zone to DNS and tried again. I got the first message, but second never arrived.
I opened 'mail' from the command line., and I could see my second message had bounced back.

Here is the last chunk of stuff from the maillog....

Hi Mike,

Have you gone back and verified the changes you've made to DNS to see what might be going wrong?

Thanks,
Rachel
