installation problem. Host file error

RHEL 5
My installation fails on the system check/network check.
Error log references my host file.
"Network check failed -- 127.0.0.1 line contains server hostname (localhost) in /etc/hosta, please remove it."

but if I remove it, I get this error:
"Network check failed -- /etc/hosts is missing localhost, please add 127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain"
