Our Scalix users authenticate against OpenLDAP which also allows authentication for Samba.
This went in seamlessly and smoothly. It is well documented if you search the Scalix knowledgebase.
I went that direction because OpenLDAP is supported far more widely. A perfect example is that Scalix supports OpenLDAP, as does Samba, but Samba's support for Scalix LDAP is questionable, and the support toold for administrating users via Scalix LDAP are non-existant, except where it pertains to Scalix. (IE: which tool would you use to specify a domain SID in Scalix's LDAP? And that's just the start.)
