LVM Snapshot Problem SLES10

Postby nieloo » Fri Mar 16, 2007 4:20 am

I would make a backup via Snapshot, but it doesn’t work

system:
SLES10 mit 2.6.16.27-0.9-bigsmp Kernel

I made a snapshot (lvcreate –L30GB –s –n sxbackup /dev/vgscalix/lvscalix), after that he was diplayed via „lvdisplay“, but not mountable, Error: please specify a file system
While creating the snapshot, following error ist diplayed: LV is in use: could not deaktivating...

I’ve add the following line to the udev-rules:
KERNEL=="dm-[0-9]*", OPTIONS+="ignore_device"

After that, I could create a snapshot without errors, while creating, but now my ext3-Journal crashs, and the /dev/vgscalix/vlscalix is read only. Remount doesn’t work, only a reboot helps
here the output of /var/log/messages:

JBD: barrier-based sync failed on dm-0 - disabling barriers
Mar 15 18:56:48 mlkxs1 kernel: klogd 1.4.1, ---------- state change ----------
Mar 15 18:56:48 mlkxs1 kernel: Aborting journal on device dm-0.
Mar 15 18:56:48 mlkxs1 kernel: journal commit I/O error
Mar 15 18:56:48 mlkxs1 kernel: ext3_abort called.
Mar 15 18:56:48 mlkxs1 kernel: EXT3-fs error (device dm-0): ext3_journal_start_sb: Detected aborted journal
Mar 15 18:56:48 mlkxs1 kernel: Remounting filesystem read-only

here the VG:

Free PE / Size 24695 / 96,46 GB
VG UUID ArOOfW-87eN-nKP5-DGFZ-eBkv-z6r1-WtbJyk

here the LV

I think, the problem are to many orphaned files (open files?). today I will test to make a snapshot with offline scalix…

In the while, you have any suggestions for me to resolv this problem?

Best regards

We also had problems with snapshots on Suse 10.1 (not SLES) also with Kernel 2.6.16.27-0.9. What you describe is a known problem caused by a race condition with the device-mapper (https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=178321). The only way to solve the problem in our case was to get the latest sources from factory distribution for the "device-mapper" and "lvm2", create new rpms and install them. The kernel 2.6.16.27-0.9 already has the necessary fixes you need to apply the new packages.
