Service Descriptions

Postby axsom1 » Thu Sep 01, 2005 5:25 pm

Curious what the following services are used for:

Dump Server
Application Link Server

Tried to find the descriptions in the docs, but didn't have any luck.

If you run

man scalix-server

this gives a good overview of the services that Scalix uses.

To answer your immediate question:

Dump Server is the original (OpenMail) implementation of our archiving service. Messages are stored in the Scalix transport format. The Scalix implementation of archiving stores the messages as MIME. More details can be found in the Adminstration Guide.

Application Link Server is another OpenMail service that was introduced a number of years ago to provide App-to-App communication. It was only ever used by a handful of OpenMail customers and we will be removing it from the Scalix server in the next release.

Cheers

Dave.

Cool, didn't know I could do that.

Thanks for the clarification.

Oh, that's a shame - I only recently came across this feature, and thought it would be pretty useful for the stuff we're doing here...

Well, that was based on the little documentation I found on "omaddapp" and friends, but to be honest I still have no really good understanding of what this means and how "applications" are different from regular user's mailboxes.

Could someone shed some light on this?

Well, believe instead of discussing a long-deprecated feature, I'd think it makes more sense to talk about

So what is the "stuff you're doing here"? Maybe we can figure out a clever way to archieve what you're wanting to do! :-)
