Cannot send outgoing mail, Sendmail not getting called ?

Postby kstitt » Mon Jul 24, 2006 9:51 pm

Hi Everyone,

We have been using Scalix for the last few months and really love it, up until recently everything has been running great.

A person in our office called to let me know that they were recieving errors when they were trying to send outside mail ("mail transport failure occurred.") It turns out that we had an outdated DNS setting on our SPAM gateway. No biggie I changed the settings and decided to go ahead and reboot the mail server. (We needed to move it anyway.)

Well that was about 6 hours ago and I have not been able to send any outgoing mail since that time.

Here is what I have done so far:

We had about 1600 messages stuck in the "Internet Gateway" queue I cleared all the messages out. (From SAC) and it still shows 29 messages in queue but is not displaying any messages on the console. I ran "omstat -q unix" it listed the 29 messages with an "ERR" status.

I could not figure out how to get those 29 messages out of the unix queue so I started look elsewhere.

I modified /var/opt/scalix/sys/unix-mapper to have this line (as suggested by another form post.)

transport-service = /usr/sbin/sendmail -bs -X/tmp/scalix-sendmail.log

And restarted Scalix. The scalix-sendmail.log file is NOT being created. It is almost as if sendmail is not being called.

I can send mail from the command line using the mail command without any problems, I can also send through telnet. I just cannot send any outgoing mail through Scalix.

Any Ideas?

Thanks!
-Kris

Hi Everyone,

Well I am back in business again. It seems that we had a stuck message that was holding things up?

I was able to clear all the messages out of the unix queue (using omqdump) except for the one that was stuck processing. In order to get rid of that message (This seems to be the one that was holding up the other mail.) I pointed the unix.mapper to an empty shell script and restarted Scalix. The seemed to free the message up so that I could delete it.

After that I changed the unix.mapper back to default and everything seems to be working again.

I am still not sure what caused the holdup, I was finally able to get a log file off of the line I added to unix.mapper. It only showed the one stuck message with a whole lot of 5.5.1 errors.

Thanks,
-Kris
