installed scalix finally!!! Fimpression was uhmm..... WOW!!!

Yep. Finally got the time to install the community version. First reaction was WOW!! This is the firs time i've seen a webclient this rich! It doesn't even look like anything like a webbrowser....and it certainly is more pleasant to use....first impressions is therefore 11 out of 10!!!!

now i need to spend more time with this and set all the configurations :)

btw, does it do push email to devices? I noticed it can sync PIM and all...wondering if it also does push email and remote syncing of device like my SE P910i :)

Depends on what exactly you mean... I just started using my new Nokia E61 (amazing device, btw.) and I use it in two ways - I'll sync my calendar using the Nokia Sync Tools against Outlook - email I receive via IMAP over-the-air - both work great and due to the support of IMAP-IDLE by both the device and our IMAP server, new eMail comes in almost immediately in a push-type fashion.

Now, obviously, it would be more interesting going forward to also allow for Calendar synchronisation to occur over the air; the device I'm using - just like your device - is a Symbian-based device that would allow to do so using a SyncML interface. Scalix does not offer SyncML yet - but obviously as we're very interested in Open Standards, this is something we look into and approach from multiple sides - stay tuned for some updates soon.

In a certain space we can already offer wireless synchronisation of email, calendaring and contact data; we have a partnership with Notify Corporation (www.notifycorp.com) whose product NotifyLink for Scalix will allow you to do just that with Windows Mobile, Palm and Blackberry devices; they are also looking at providing a SyncML or Symbian client, so this is one very possible path to a solution here.

Another trend - looking at gmail Mobile - seems to be a microbrowser-based online solution on mobile devices; obviously something we aren't ignoring either.

As said, wide-open space and huge challenges ahead.... some people might call this interesting times. ;-)

we're running CE as a small business and pretty much the only reason (since we have less than 25 users total) to migrate to SBE is the wireless PIM support.
however, in order to justify that move it would need to support SyncML for symbian devices.

is there any news on when the scalix version of notify link will (if at all?) support SyncML and symbian devices?

that is also what's holding me back right now. My phone and staff's phones are UIQ2.1 based, which needs syncml.....

-) We *love* open standards.....

Scalix and Notify are looking into SyncML support; what's holding us back a little is the fact that eMail support in SyncML is fairly new and not many devices support it. I would personally love it (got my Nokia E61 three weeks ago...) and I think I may dare to say that you will be seeing more support for standards-based devices later THIS year!

thanks for the update florian.. look forward to syncML so that we can upgrade to PIM support. in the meantime (since i was actually in the process of getting an e61 myself), have you tried to use the IMAP IDLE feature instead of notify? if so, how well does it work with scalix (and e61)?

I use an app called ChatterEmail (www.chatteremail.com) on my Treo 650. It utilizes IMAP Idle and it works GREAT!. It can also handle secure IMAP which is a big plus. One of the best email-only apps available IMHO.

well, yes and no.

yes - i have seen situations where the connection is "lost" and i need to dis- and reconnect; however, for my usage pattern (only turn email monitoring anyway when i'm out on the road and want it - because of the cost associated with typical pay-by-volume data plans here in germany and battery life), this is acceptable and actually good so I'm not having trouble with it.

the phone has also crashed a couple of times; my assumption was always that i'm an early adopter of something 1.0 and have to plan for a few updates - it usually takes nokia about 6 months to stabilize the s/w on a new device. I would wonder if they haven't received this kind of feedback and are working on it. however, they don't communicate well....

i like the device.
