in/out bound port 25 blocked by ISP

I am new to email servers, but I want to host a ms exchange like system for its collaborative capabilities. I have the Scalix server up and running and outlooks works great with it.

However it has come to my attention that my ISP blocks both inbound and outbound port 25. I have found services (dyndns mailhop relay…) that can over come the inbound problem by using an alternative port. But I have not found a good solution for the outbound. Can I have sendmail forward all outgoing mail through my ISP smtp server? I have been talking to my ISP and they are unable to remove the block, I might be able to get a different answer if I switch to using a business account, but that is going to be a hassle.

My first idea would be to switch ISPs.

Can you give some details on how your ISP allows you to submit mail ?

The measures are an attempt to impede spammers. Their solution to email is to use their email servers. They have a web base client for those who need to access email from outside the ISPs domain. Form inside the ISPs domain you can use outlook or what have you. So the only machines on the domain that can transfer information on port 25 to and from the internet are the ISP email servers. This has become a common practice for many ISP in the USA. But each ISP seems a little different. Some control port 25 on user by user bases. So if you are suspected of spamming they will block your port. Other simply block the port for everyone, and others give you the ability to request it to be removed.

So as it stands I have to have outlook configured to use the ISPs SMTP server to send mail when I am in the domain, and if I am out side of it to use their web client. It is easy to see why I am interested in using Scalix. I need to be able to have Scalix either use the ISPs SMTP serve instead of the sendmail server on board or if it is possible to have sendmail forward all message through the ISPs SMTP server.

I will also look into another agreement with the ISP, but that seem less promising.

In that case, use the search facility and look for the word "mailertable". This will show you a number of posts on how you can configure sendmail to use an ISP server for outbound mail.

You can tell sendmail to send to a smart relay host. Edit /etc/mail/sendmail.cf, Find the "Smart" relay host section and enter:

DSispsmtp.isp.ext

That's basically doing the same thing as telling outlook to use the isp's smtp mail relay only you are doing it on a sendmail/system wide level.
