Scalix Introduces Community Edition Raw
Enables Community of Linux System Administrators, Developers and Enthusiasts to Customize Popular Free Email and Calendaring System
SAN MATEO, CA — APRIL 3, 2006 — Scalix today introduced a new version of its free email and calendaring software called Community Edition Raw (CE Raw). CE Raw is functionally equivalent to Scalix's popular Community Edition software except that its components are individually available, making CE Raw readily customizable. Instead of providing a GUI installer and integrated packaging, CE Raw makes all of its binary packages individually available and provides manual installation instructions via a community Wiki with links to required third-party components. It is available for the Debian Linux distribution as well as Red Hat and SUSE Linux operating system variants. Over time, CE Raw will be extended to include Scalix early release software, additional source code, porting files, language translation kits and support for other platforms. CE Raw's intent is to provide an attractive platform for Linux system administrators, developers and enthusiasts, by offering more flexibility to adapt the email and calendaring system for their needs and the needs of the community.
With this announcement, there are now two free versions of Scalix software, Community Edition and CE Raw. Community Edition is ideal for organizations that want the world's most advanced free email and calendaring software in an easy-to-install and easy-to-use package. CE Raw is for members of the Linux technical community who want a free, robust, reliable and open email and calendaring server, with rich email client support, that can be easily customized.
Since Community Edition was introduced in August, 2005, it was downloaded more than 20,000 times. It is used on several thousand servers by hundreds of thousands of people. The usage growth has been accompanied by extensive feedback on the Scalix Community Forum, which has grown 10-fold. The community interest in Scalix has grown in large part due to the value of Community Edition's 25 free premium users, who get the ScalixConnect for Outlook connector that provides the most advanced third-party native Outlook support. All users can benefit from Scalix Web Access, the AJAX web email client that combines the power of desktop email with the convenience of a browser.
CE Raw was released in response to community feedback about using Community Edition in new ways. Scalix has responded by making the packages of Community Edition individually available along with installation documentation and a Wiki that enables community members to share technical tips and how-to information.
In the future, Scalix plans to make additional CE Raw components available. As a precursor, the company released in February its first open source project, ScalixConnect for Evolution, that provides robust support for Novell Evolution, helping to make email and groupware a reality on Linux desktops. The company also plans to release early versions of new functionality first in CE Raw to solicit community feedback.
"The initial launch of Community Edition energized a large community of users around Scalix, and now many more people want to do more with it, which is great," said Glenn Winokur, Chief Executive Officer, Scalix. "CE Raw is the next step in enabling the community to enhance the software for the benefit of many. It's also a great way for us to better collaborate with the community. We are very excited by CE Raw and hope that the community will find it to be an intriguing and valuable resource."
PRICING AND AVAILABILITY
CE Raw is free. It can be freely redistributed as long as there is no fee involved. It is supported by the community and is not meant for production deployment. For usage details, please see the CE Raw license agreement accompanying the software. CE Raw is available for Red Hat, SUSE Linux and Debian operating systems. It can be downloaded at http://www.scalix.com/ceraw/.
